Maytag MFD2560HES Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator Logo
Posted on Jul 04, 2009

My MFD2560HES side by side with bottom freezer is not cooling any more. I purchased a new compressor relay/capacitor and replaced it today. It worked just fine for about 3 hours and then it started doing the same thing again. The compressor makes a humming noise about every 3 minutes or so and it feels very warm/hot to the touch. I am finally giving up with this thing. It is about 5 years old and has worked flawlessly until about a week ago. Has the compressor gone bad?

I have the same refrigerator and it is the same age as yours. We just replaced the compressor back in November. Sounds like the same problem.

I've been told by a tech who repaired my MFD2560HEQ this past week that many of this model had a problem with compressor failure. Your symptoms are classic. What you are hearing is the starter relay trying to start a warm/hot compressor by supplying it with an extra jolt of electricity, but because of the faulty compressor (or if you are lucky a faulty relay) that's warm (cool ones start more easily often) is refusing to budge into motion and compress the freon. Maytag, I believe, has a five year warranty on the compressors. They did on mine, but unless you have an extended warranty the labor replacing it is not covered and that will be around 2-3 hours worth. This is the price we are paying for our quest for energy efficiency. Compressors are being built so small and light that they fail much more often than grandma's old, old refrigerator that was built like Fort Knox and ran for 45 years, remember? But we're being energy efficient! Thank you environmental extremists! I wish I could send you the repair bill. When the compressor completely cools down a new or even an old relay may be able to start it, but with this model, I am told, when it warms up/gets hot, it has a tendency to lock up and the voltage from a regulation relay is not enough to start it. In fact in the attempt to do so you may even have a problem with it starting on fire, so be careful.

How can I tell if my relay compressor is going out? Can I replace this part or do I have to have a repair person come in? Can I purchase a replacement part for the chees/meat door?

If the compressor relay is going bad you will hear a clicking sound at the compressor and poor cooling in the refrigerator.
You can replace the relay yourself.

The fan is running, the fridge trys to start the compressor frequent, but it stops in one minute.

That sounds like short cycling and could be defective compressor start relay, overload and Capacitor need to be replaced. The longer it tries to start the hotter the compressor gets so I believe until these parts=> 67005560 Start Relay With Overload and Run Capacitor 65889-4 are checked or replaced you need to unplug. It also could be your compressor is not in good shape. If you would like to test your compressor follow these instructions here=> Whirlpool Products The location for these parts are here=> Maytag MFD2560HES and in photos part 10 and 11. I will assist you in any way if needed, Thanks, Sea Breeze
Make sure both fans run at all times compressor runs because fans do not always stop when they go bad. They run when they want to.

Compressor tries to kick on but does not. Is there a simple fix like replacing the Capacitor?

I would check the start relay. To find out if this is bad first unplug the refrigerator. Remove the lower cover from your refrigerator. Then take the cover off that is on the side of the compressor, you will see wires going to this. Now you should be able to see the start relay plugged on to the side of the compressor and unplug it. Now the best way to tell if it's bad is to shake it. If it rattles, it's bad and needs to be replaced. If not, most of the time it's ok. But rather than saying the compressors bad, you might want to replace it anyways because it does not cost much. A quick check on the compressor is to remove the start relay. You will see 3 pins connect a multi meter set for continuity. You should have continuity between any of the 3 pins. If you do not the compressor is bad. If you replace it and it doesn't work then the compressor is bad and you'll need to call a repairman. (Note that compressors are very costly and are normally not worth fixing). You can enter your model # at www.appliancehelponline.com for diagrams and illustrations or to purchase a start relay. A 3 in 1 start relay will also work fine. All parts come with installation instructions.

Freezer and fridge not cooling. I hear the motor trip in and out occasionally. It is a MFD2560HES

Sound like the start relay, start capacitor and the overload all located at and near the compressor cover on the side of the compressor need to be looked at to see if they are defective. When this happens this is the most likely reason. Let me know if you need more help, Thanks, Sea Breeze
