Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have a Kenmore white single door refrigerator that is non ice making at least 12 to 15 yrs old that is noisy. Can it be padded or serviced to make the operating noise stop or is it just too old ? Is it possible to make it quieter?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

There are only 2 components in a basic refrigerator that could possible cause noise.

  • fan (least likely) - that draws the cold air from the freezer section towards the refrigerator section. Since this is temperature controlled, it would only operate when ctivated by the thermostat, i.e. when the refrigerator section's temperature goes down a preset level. It would only be audible when the fridge door is open;
  • compressor motor (most likely) - the compressor motor by the nature of its function is noisy. It is made up of a motor that runs a piston driven pump in a single cylindrical assembly. Since the compressor motor and pump are hermetically sealed in a housing, the noise that could be heard would be almost like humming. If the noise sounds more like a "brrr", then it would be the rubber insulator feet of the housing. These feet isolates the compressor housing to its mounting points. There are normally 3 mounting points held by long bolts and nuts. Between the compressor bottom part of its housing and the floor of the refrigerator would be these rubber mounts. They are replaceable. A quick workaround is to insert 1 or 2 layers of insulator strips between the housing's bottom and the floor. They could be made from rubber beach slippers.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Hi,,

If your refrigerator is not making ice try to do this

  • Check the temperature settings
  • Assure that there is enough room for air flowin the refrigerator or freezer
  • Check for air flow restrictions in vents
  • Test the temperature control
  • Clean the condensor coils
  • Check the door seals
  • Test the door switch
  • Test defrost heater
  • Test defrost timer
  • Test evaporator fan
  • Check for a clogged drain tube
  • Check for refrigerant leak
if it is noise try to check this

  • Hissing and popping is normal on frost free refrigerators, it is the defrost heater
  • Check that the refrigerator is level
  • Check the drain pan
  • Check the condensor fan
  • Check the evaporator fan
  • Inspect the compressor mounts
Good luck !!!!

Regards

Kenmore fridge model 596 - 79213014 2 yrs old accumulates ice at the bottom freezer. The fridge has built it ice maker but we did not opt for that option. Can anyone pls advise how tofix the problem?

IS THERE A CONTAINER FOR THE ICE TO COLLECT IN UNDER THE ICEMAKER??? IF NOT YOU WILL NEED TO GET OR ORDER ONE..
NEXT THERE IS A WIRE LEVER ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ICE MAKER. WHEN THE ICE PUSHED THAT LEVER UP IT WILL QUIT MAKING ICE. WITH YOUR HAND GENTLY LIFT THE LEVER UP UNTIL IT STAYS LOCKED IN THE UP POSITION... ONCE IT IS IN THE UP POSITION ... IT WILL NOT PRODUCE ANY ICE.

Kenmore s/s f/f; ice dispenser working; water dispenser not

If you can't hear the solenoid on the water inlet valve(it's on the back where the water supply hooks up) when you try the water then the water switch on the dispenser is at fault.

If you do hear it Your water line could be frozen in the door. You can disconnect the line under the unit before it goes into the door at the bottom hinge. Push the dispenser button and see if it comes out there. If it doesleave the door open till it thaws.

If it doesn't come out there disconnect it at the water inlet valve and see if it comes out there.

Hi,
With the problems it is presenting, I would say it's very likely.
However it may take a bit of detective work to find which board is defective.

Check a part suppliers link Here for price comparison so you have some ideas.
