Take or send the computer to a Toshiba Service Center to have the password reset or cleared. You may have to show proof of ownership, and the service is not free if computer is not under warranty.

Open CPU Cabinet's case and look for button cell of coin size on the main motherboard(circuit board) and push the pin with holding the button cell, the cell will come out. This will power off the BIOS memory and the BIOS will reset.

Most DESKTOP computers have a jumper to "clear CMOS settings",
but most NOTEBOOK computers do NOT have that jumper.

The password exists to protect the owner of the computer, should a thief be trying to use the computer.

You probably can remove the disk-drive, and copy the files onto a new computer, if you don't want to pay TOSHIBA to bypass the password.

Usually one of the following keys right when boot screen is viewed will get you into bios on most computers.
Esc, F2, F10, Del, or F12 which should be the case with the Portege.

Keep hitting escape while starting up. Message will say there is an error and hit F1. Hit F1 and you'll enter bios.

To get into bios on portege 3480 you need to hit escape couple of times right after powering on. Once you get a list of available options, hit F1.
