I have a compaq laptop and yesterday I was trying to mute the microphone so I right clicked on the volume icon in the bottom right corner and went to recording and then hit properties for my mic. I then clicked device usage and made it disabled. This wasn't what I meant to do, and now my microphone doesn't work at all and I don't know how to enable it again because the microphone icon disappeared.

If you have a built-in microphone, turn the mic volume down (right click the speaker icon on the bottom right of the taskbar, click "open volume control" then turn down the mic volume or mute it. hope this helps.
if the sound driver it is ok and working ..and the microphone do not have any damages..than the path to do it ..is double click on the volume icon in the right on the task bar ..after that it will open a volume manager ...click options in the left side and properties..in that list click on the microphone case to activate ..(if the mic is not present and you use an external click on the pink in) after that will be exposed on the list of volumes...be sure it is not muted..and have the volume on maximum .. For to activate it in the yahoo messenger or skype..you have to choose call set-up and run it for to be detected..in yahoo messenger and for skype choose to open sound set-up and run detection also ..
No, there is no built-in microphone on your machine, you have to buy one separately. NB! It requires a combined headphone/microphone jack. The regular jacks work for
the headphones, however the microphones will not work. See here
You must provide more information please but to assist with troubleshooting this issue ( I am assuming that you have a regular microphone input that is a 1/8 inch plug. 1. Test the microphone in another pc to see if you get a response. If so then the issue is in the Windows volume control window. 2.Click the volume control icon in (usually lower right corner of the screen. 3.you will then see a slider bar and a mute box and the word "mixer" should be visible. 4. Click the "Mixer" link and you will see tabs captioned as General ,customer ,levels, (your sound card name), and advanced. Click the "advance) tab this will show you what is muted or checked for mute. 5. If there is a check or is is muted for you microphone then click or un check or deselect it. Then try your microphone. You should here audio. 6. click apply or OK and this will set the microphone to activate
Right click on the sound icon by the clock.Choose "open with volume control."...select options menu tab.---properties---make sure microphone is checked, click ok...make sure mic is not muted. it comes this way standard for security.
Go to your speaker icon in your task bar on right hand side and right click then on volume control.
Go to file then select options/properties and then scroll down to the microphone on the show volume controls box and tick it.
The microphone volume slider should now show and make sure the mute is unticked.
