Re: Cant get psp to work
Try Holding the R trigger and turn the power on at the same time. This puts you in a different mode.Press the display brightness button to see the version. Power off and back on again to see if that resets it. This is only a guess I would appreciate at least a thanks for trying.

the umd drive is approaching its end of the life. you might need to buy http://www.consolezombie.com/store/slim-replacement-drive-laser-assembly-p-34.html and replace your umd drive. This is what i just did to my psp-2001.
PS: The above link is only for PSP-200x (slim version of PSP)
psp firmware is corrupted, you be need to continue thats update.. 1. update via UMD, the umd that are use must have same firmware version or higher (5.03). check it in other psp. make sure you have a fully battery, then turn on psp.
2. update using sony media go, it a pc client for sony device.. connect psp to pc via usb cable, you will need a internet connection on pc. and it will update to the latest version - 5.51.
your son probably dropped his PSP at the time and the UMD drive broke or if your son says he didnt drop it you can get a cutip and softly clean your UMD reader the little bubble sorta in your PSP be carful while doing that
I do believe is a laser issue but sometimes the motherboard get bad if the unit was dropped on the flor. The psp isa multilayer unit construction and need some expertees to troubleshooting the problem.Try to get back to a previous firmware or try if the laser get stuckd inside.Try to move it gently from the back door and sopmetimes will re allign by itself
Yeah you can update your psp, just make sure it has at least 70% charge, 100 would be be better, plug it in and make sure you don't switch it off during its update. if you do, it will be bricked. as long as you do it properly, it will be fine.
alright turn off your psp by holding down the power switch for atleast five seconds. when it is turned off hold down the right trigger (the R1 button) then at the same time hold down the power switch button to get to the recovery menu. after that go to configuration then somewhere amongst all of the displayed lines one of them should either say no umd or umd required toward the end of the text. if it says umd required change it to where it says no umd. then go back and go to advance then advance configuration and disable all and this should solve your problem. hope i helped.
umm i have the same problem your umd drive is probaly broken to check this open your umd slot and with the opening facing you, you should see a litlle tab sticking up (black or gray) and hold it down your umd scanner should emit a red laser and moves up and down.
