Don't just keep cranking if it don't start right away' Give the starter a break. It's getting hot because you just keep cranking on it. Any vehicle diesel has glow plugs to heat the fuel chamber to make it start fast. Be sure you are making use of the glow plugs and it will start fast. If your glow plugs are not working, find out why. Could be just the glow plug relay or connection to it. Or possibly the glow plugs are burned out. Either way, you HAVE to have glow plugs in use on a diesel upon initial start up till it's warmed up. Then will start without them. Most are automated system. You just have to wait till the glow plug light goes out to start cranking on it. I hope this helps you to more understand the workings of a diesel cold start system.

I have a 95 rodeo Turbo diesel the problem is the motor will turn over but won't start I can push start it and when it's hot it starts fine I have no glow plug light on dash can u help

Battery, starter. Diesels have to turn over fairly fast to get started. If the battery is low on amps or the starter is dragging could be the problem. I would also look at fixing the glow plugs if they aren't working. Just because the light doesn't come on, doesn't mean they aren't working.

This is my first Desel and not had any enjoyment.its been a month of trying to s Start this.I have a 1992 turbo idi 7.3 I changed glow plugs relay prints I've checked fuses .just today I had power and...

First it's "diesel" , your not giving a lot of information here but for a diesel to fire it will require 350 psi of compression. It sounds like it will run if you pull it, that indicates you may be spinning it faster to get higher pressuer or heat build up in the cylinders to actually fire the fuel. I take it the glow plugs or working? If not get them working first before you go on. I assume it may be a high mileage diesel it could have been dusted and have low compression.

1993 F350 turbo idi wont always start

There is a safety switch on top of the brake pedal lever or clutch lever which is suppose to prevent lurching on start-ups. It is suppose to insure that the Brake pedal is pushed OR the clutch is down before the engine will crank.

The Ignition switch is interrupted by the above cutout switches. But when Ignition is turned on, the Glow plug timer should click and cycle if Power Relay is giving it juice. So if you do not hear that type of clicking, the glow plugs will stay cold.

I would check to see if power is going to the Power Relay above the glow plug timer, and if it is getting power, does the Power Relay send it to the Timer? The starting circuit is more involved in a Diesel because the fuel must be atomized by heating it for initial starts. But you must be getting this process if jumping the solenoid results in the engine starting.

Therefore the big test is whether the small wire to the starter solenoid is dead when a foot is pressing the Brake or clutch pedal when the Ignition key is in the STARTER position.

So either your Ignition switch is bad at the STARTER terminal position or the signal is interrupted by the anti-lurch Interlock switch. It is quite common for problems with this switch being hit and broken or displaced by the Drivers' feet.

There was also no indication of whether you jumped the solenoid on a warm engine which could atomize the fuel by compression or a very cold engine which needed the glow plugs to work.

Please comment on my info and report your success.

    No start

Im gonna assume it's a IDI diesel (you don't say)but that year should
to see if it's gettin fuel try loosning one or two of the injector feed lines (on top of injectors) with a 15mm tube wrench and crank a few times
you should see wet fuel gush out
    if not troubleshoot fuel system
if you got fuel you got internal problems(valves)
