When you look at the processes list, which one(s) use up most of the processor? It might be you have a virus or trojan horse/worm working in the background. Download and run this free software:http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-System...

How to force quit uncooperative programs on a PC.

Have you ever encountered annoyingly slow or freezing programs that will not quit when you try to close a window? There is a simple keystroke you can use to quit the programs:Ctrl+Alt+Del. This enables you to access the Task Manager. Task Manager keeps track of all the computers processes as well as the CPU usage and physical memory and can be used to monitor and quit unnecessary programs that can slow or freeze your computer. You simply hold all three buttons (in sequence) and you will be redirected to a different screen that gives you options. Look for Task Manager. (note: If you have Windows XP, Task Manager will pop up as a window). There are 6 tabs (Applications, Processes, Services, Performance, Networks and Users). We will only cover the Applications tab.Once you are in Task Manager, click on the applications tab, if it is not already showing. You will see the titles of programs you are using, if any, and its status (running or not responding). If a program is not responding simply highlight it, by clicking on it and clicking on the button at the bottom labeled "End Task".This should force quit the program(s).

How to clean up start up processes

Questions about optimize start up:
How to remove program from start up?
My computer boots very slow? How do I clean up start up processes?
Windows startup very slow, how to fix it?

Why clean up start up processes?
Windows Startup program will load the default programs or processes you add to your computer. The test result shows a new system only boot within 30 seconds. As you install antivirus program or other applications, it becomes very slow. Sometimes, the startup gets bloated not due to your computer behaviors. Malicious software is prone to add useless processes on startup without your known. You are not aware that your computer becomes more and more slow until serious computer problem occurs. Don’t ignore a slow start up, it is the root of Blue Screen and computer freezing.

How to clean up start up processes?
The first thing you should do is to remove spyware or adware from your computer. I prefer to AVG, it is a free anti-virus program. If you want to clean virus completely, you need boot in safe mode and disconnect your Internet.

Hok is a professor with over ten year’s computer experience. He suggest us use ErrorFix. This is a pc optimize tool which can clean up system registry entries, useless program, start up processes and junk files. With this program, your computer will be obviously improved. Just a few clicks, you can remove processes that slow your computer.

What’s more to speed up your computer?
Do not download Peer-to-Peer Download Software! Maybe you are using some software such like YouTube Downloader. These are probably some of the least likely contenders for system-slowdown but they are popular on the internet. Those kinds of program can take up memory space and damage your computer. Also they can automatically add itself as your start up.

Why is my dell computer so slow?

Use CCleaner, Auslogic Disk Defrag, install Spyware Terminator and run full scan, remove programs from startup. You can also use "msconfig" (start/type it in, choose) to really lower the amount of processes and programs running but I wouldn't recommend unless you know what's vital plus check the box to remove all Windows processes from list before you start disabling processes.

The computer may has a program that takes control of the processor at this time. You may view most of the processes happening on the computer by opening up the "Task Manager". You may access this by "Right Clicking" the "Taskbar" or "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Delete", and go to the "Processes" tab. Next you will want to click on the "CPU" line to view what processes are using the CPU the most. You may have to click on the button "Show Processes from All Users" to see all of them. The most likely possibility is the computer is compromised by a spy of some sort. I have seen this from Social Networking sites. I always recommend backing up all your important files however you desire to back them up. IF this process hog cannot be found it also could be a Memory hog as well. If the memory used goes near the Physical Memory available the computer will reduce the other processes to keep the computer running. All the processes running are like a Juggler, the more processes running with little Physical Memory is like the Juggler Juggling all those "Balls" within a small room, somewhere the juggler is going to drop a ball, in this case it may be the sound from the computer. In your case I would hope adding memory would be the best remedy for this situation.

Creating more space

It sounds like you are short on Memory / RAM

Your best bet is to see what is using your memory. To do this;

1. go to Start -> Run and type taskmg
2. Click the Processes tab
3. Click the Mem usage column

From this you should be able to see which processes / programs are running in the background that are chewing up your memory.

You many not need to remove the culprits completely, instead, you could just change their settings to stop them running when you start the computer.

If you are unable to free up enough memory by removing programs which are running in the background you may need to look at upgrading your RAM.

This is most likely a problem with the USB port you are plugging it into or a problem with memory - you could just be running too many programs simultaneously which causes everything to lag.

If it is a problem with your USB, try all other USB ports on your computer. If none of your USB ports are working and you have determined that it is not because of other problems like memory, you can get external USB expansion ports, which would plug into other ports on your computer.

To check if you are using too many programs, press ctrl, alt, and delete simultaneously to bring up the task manager. Click on the the Performance tab which will show you the usage of your computer's resources. If CPU usage or Physical Memory are near maximum capacity, you should click the Processes tab to see what programs are running and see if there is anything you do not need which can be shut down.

Another good tip to reduce memory usage is to download the free program Spybot Search & Destroy, which finds and removes harmful spyware, which can endanger your privacy as well as slow down your computer.
