Probably one of the most asked questions on Fixya about a Garmin GPS.
Garmin added the PIN lock feature to deter thieves from stealing a GPS. If the PIN code could be easily resettable, then the feature would be pointless.
First, ask your friend what the PIN is. If he can remember his credit card PIN, he should be able to come up with a couple of possible numbers to unlock the unit.
Otherwise, you have (2) choices:
1. Go to the location where your friend set up the PIN and turn on the unit. The unit will not ask for the PIN. This is known as the "safe" location.
2. Contact Garmin and pay whatever fee they charge to unlock it, however be warned... if the unit is stolen and has been reported as stolen, you may get a visit by law enforcement.
