Why when I press a letter the key/striker wont strike the letter/paper? I have to do it manually with my finger to get the letter to hit the ribbon on the paper. I do not know how to describe this exactly but the typewriter will not put the letter on the paper the ribbon is good because if I push the black piece up I can get the letter to print on the piece of paper.

Be sure the pitch selection is correct. If it is set to PS when using a 10,12 or 15 pitch wheel it will select incorrect letters.

SOURCE: HAVE AN OLD OLYMPIA MANUAL TYPEWRITER WITH SPOOL

You might try the office places (Office Depot, Staples, etc.). There are also online sources for ribbons. Here's one that came from a Google search for "typewriter ribbons". There were a few more, but this one had nice pictures.

Good luck with the hunt! Thanks for using Fixya.

SOURCE: How do I adjust the keys on an Olympia Socialite

This is a manual typewriter, the harder you press the darker the print. You might try a fresh ribbon.

The pitch selector switch on the L. side of the keyboard should be in 10 or 12 not PS. Also press down on it and slide it a few times they do get dirty.

Cutting of bottom of letters

I understand your issue (and I still have a typewriter too!--Still works when the computer doesn't). The bottom part of your characters are not printing on the paper. Check to make sure the platen is lowered and snapped into place. If it is not entirely in place, it could cause the letters to be mis-shapen. There could be an adjustment to the key module that would raise it--sometimes there is a lever that is used to switch from black to red to stencil (when the keys do not strike the ribbon) and if that lever is not in the correct slot, the letters could be partially omitted. The other thing would be to check that the ribbon is loaded properly so that the entire key strikes the inked portion of the ribbon.

The return key does not work and even with a new ribbon the text does not show up on the paper.

Imagine your fingers are spread out and the have letters on them, a small electromagnetic hamer smacks the backside of your finger pushing it into ribbon and paper this makes a letter. What is occurring is the hamer is fireing between your fingers and hit the space between them, no letter is formed. Check your daisy whell or change it, the return key most likely has a cracked solder joint where it is conncected to the circuit board, if you can get the cass of I could probably talk you though the procedure but that's pushing it if you've never used a soldering iron, good luck,Bret

The striker wont hit the letter

Does the striker move forward, many times the machine needs some 3 and 1 oi in that area, not alot... just enough to free up sticky hammers.

IBM Wheelwriter 6 Typewriter - while typing, characters just quit printing on paper. Checked ribbon, machine etc. Everything checked out?? What could be the problem.

It is probably the print solenoid that has a broken cap. I have seen a few advertisers that sell the repair kit with instructions. It is fairly simple to repair.

For a Swintec 8014 typewriter: the bottom portion of the letters are not tranferring to the paper when the keys are striked. although the ribbon shows the full letter being striked, only the top portion...

Check to be sure the ribbon dosen't have a fold in it and is fully seated in place, be sure the platen is fully seated in the side frames, check the correction tape for proper imstallation it can rob the print if to high.

Letters aren't striking ribbon

Get some WD40 and spray it on thw segment (the place where the type bars are swung) then everywhere the key mechinism pivots.

Wheelwriter 6

You may need a ribbon motor or motor board, however on the older wheelwriters sometimes the gear mesh gets sloppy and gears jam tooth for tooth. Try moving the ribbon lift gear/cam on rt. side of the carrier by hand with the machine off if it won't move that's the trouble. Wiggle it back and forth and it may free up.

KEY STRIKING PRESSURE

Try taking the ribbon out and looking at it see if there is one spot for each character on the ribbon or if they are overlapping. If they are over lapping then either you have a problem with the ribbon drive assembly on the machine or it is set for a multi-strike ribbon.
