Question about Washing Machines
Different manufacturers have different methods of removing the agitator. Since you posted no brand name or model number of your washer, it makes it hard to determine how your's is configured. The instructions below are for a Whirlpool manufactured washing machine. (This includes Kenmore, Estate and Roper):
1, Remove the agitator center cap (or fabric softener dispenser, if equipped) by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap.
2. If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up.
3. Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16” hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8” to ½” ratchet adapter to remove.
4, Remove the entire agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep the upper portion of the agitator (called the auger) and parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make reassembly much easier.
When reinstalling the agitator bolt, ensure that you DO NOT overtighten. This can damage the agitator and restrict its movement. Tighten until "snug".
When reinstalling the center post cap, make sure it is seated properly. This cap is used as an air gap to keep water out of the transmission. Failure to install correctly, can lead to leaks and potential damage to the drive components.
If your agitator is not one of the models listed above, please post back with your information, so that I may assist you better. I hope this helps you.
