Question about Garden

Won't stay running like it is not getting gas. just bought it used. It has sat in a shed for a couple of years. It is getting spark and will start briefly when I squirt some gas into the spark plug hole.

Thanks for the input. I disassembled the carb and cleaned it with carb cleaner. I also took the gas tank off emptied and filled with fresh gas. Put it all back together and it started on about the 4th pull. Pretty good considering I talked them down $100 because it wouldn't stay running when I went to buy it.

Check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks. If they are o.k., then:

You will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner. Make sure the small screen is free of debris. (Should be able to see daylight through it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance on:

1. Fuel line replacement or
2. Carburetor kit replacement

Just let me know.

Ahh easy, carb lines are either blocked, and (or) old (cracks) thus giving you a Vacuum leak, (gently) pull them out and see if (filter) is also "clogged", if it is either replace, or attach a "clean" piece of tubing and again (gently) blow some air through it, put back and place the right Mixture of pre-mix in it, let me know if this does the trick, god bless

Generator Won't start

Gap the plug at .030 What is most likely the main problem is whatever gas sat in the carb. Even with fresh gas there will be some old gas still in the float bowl. You may be able to drain the bowl and be OK but I have a feeling that the carb will need to come off and be disassembled and cleaned properly. You can try spraying carb cleaner (I dislike starting fluid as it is too volatile and carb cleaner does just as well in this instance) into the carb/intake. Remove the air filter, open the choke, and spray the carb cleaner in through that way if possible. You can actually keep an engine running by spraying with short bursts. Even by just spraying once you should be able to get the engine to start. If it does start but then will not stay running without spraying more into the engine then it is a carb problem.

The fuel system is most likely gummed up from bad gasoline, flush the entire system, replace the fuel pump and the filter as well. Add a can of CHEMTOOL to the gas tank to help dissolve the varnish.

What is the method your machine uses to decide when to fire the spark plug? Does it have a magneto, and/or ignition points under the flywheel, or a crankshaft postion sensor?

If the engine is turning, but slow, she may need the battery terminals cleaned, if it has sat for over a year, yes, it may need a new battery. If the engine is turning over and she is not cranking up. Standard rules apply... does she have fuel? does she have spark, does she have compression? First thing is easy, get a can of starting fluid and give her a spray in the air filter area during cranking, if she pops off you have spark, which means no fuel. If it does not try to hit, that means no spark and more trouble shooting will need to be done. If it starts on starting fluid, you may have a bad fuel pump. AS gas turns to gunk as it dries up. And that may have gummed up the pump and filter. Hope this helps FixYa up.

I have had good luck using an engine starting fuel, sprayed into the air cleaner/intake. Any auto repair store will carry this product. CAUTION, HIGHLE FLAMMABLE!!!!!!! Many mechanics frown on using starting fluids, but I have a bad shoulder & that is what I do on the 3rd pull.

Have you tried replacing the starter? I know starters can go bad if the car is not started or run for a long time.

I am getting the same car, with the same issue.. it sat for 2 yrs and won't start.

My mechanic told me it is probably a starter.
