My dell Inspiron 9400 keeps freezing

This could be a number of problems, one or many. Some things to consider

1) You may be infected with a virus or a bunch of spyware. Do you have Antivirus and antispyware utilities? I recommend AVG and Spybot.

2) You may have a bad hard drive. Try booting into safe mode and run a dskchk and/or defrag.

3) You may have some faulty memory. Boot into safe mode and right click on "My Computer" click properties and make sure you have the right amount of RAM listed in this area. If not you may need to replace your memory.

My laptop is freezing up soon after start up. It takes a long time for the system to initialize, it is an instant problem as it has worked perfectly up until now. When we opened the screen this morning,...

It would appear that your laptop is infected with spyware / malware.

You can verify this by answering the following: is the hard drive light constantly on after boot up? If the hard drive is constantly running, then you probably have spyware running in the background and this is causing the laptop to "freeze".

Disconnect the laptop from the Internet and see if the laptop will respond after a period of time after boot up. Spyware uses the Internet connection - removing this connection should allow the comptuer to start responding.

You will need to perform the standard procedures to remove viruses and spyware. Make sure your antivirus is up-to-date and at least install a free version of an anti-spyware removal tool. Microsoft offers Windows Defender for free, LavaSoft also offers a free version of their Ad-Aware program.

Install the anti-spyware program and run a deep scan, reboot and repeat. You will need to do this at least 4 times to clean out the "Last Known Good" restores as well as the currently running image.

Computer Freezes when connected to internet.

The first step is to verify that you are not infected with a spyware or virus infection. The fact that you are only having freezing problems when you are connected to the internet is a sign that you may have some kind of infection.

The Geek Squad website has links to free online virus and spyware scanners that can tell you if you're infected.

If those scans come up as clean could you please post a Hijackthis log file so we can look at what processes you have running?
