Question about Whirlpool AWT5108 Top Load Washer

Whirlpool AWT 5108 not working (lid switch?)

I have a whirlpool 5108 top loading wash machine. It stopped working mid cycle, and hasnt worked since. It didnt explode, smoke, smell or draw attention to itself in anyway, it just stopped. full of water of course :-)
I have had a look in the machine and everything looks ok. When I swith it on the dial for selecting programs moves a little, but then nothing happens - it seems to be waiting for something. This is exactly the same with the lid open or closed, and also, when i touch the lid switch after it has been on for a couple of minutes it's quite warm - I believe it has some sort of mechanism to keep the lid shut while its running.
I think my problem might be this lid swtich, but cant for the life of me get it out, and as it has three wires running into it I cant even join two together to test my theory.....
can anyone tell me how to remove the switch, which of the three wires would be the ones to test, or suggest anything else...

my clothes are getting very smelly while I try and stubbornly fix this myself, and my girlfriend would really appreciate any help any of you could give me!!

You are right to assume the lid switch as being the cause of your problem. A washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

WASHING MACHINE stopped in mid-cycle

if it stops at the drain and spin cycle check the lid switch, open the lid,set the washer to spin cycle and pull out the timer knob, stick a screw driver into the hole where the strike from the lid goes into and push down,if you don't hear a clicking sound when you push down on the switch in the hole then you have a bad lid switch but if your machine does run sometime it sounds like the switch will work if you push down on it,could be cracked where the screws go into it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5aW9WkTFhE watch video on how to replace it.if you do hear a clicking sound when you open and close the lid or push down with the screw driver you could have a bad timer but check the lid switch first

Might just be a bad lid switch. Push down on lid or switch.

Washing Machine stopped dead in mid-cycle

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

If it still doesn't work, I'd use the diagnostics procedures in the Service manual to determine if it is the Motor.

Washer stopping mid-cycle

Push down on lid. You may have a bad lid switch. Start machine and press the switch down with something like a screwdriver and see if the motor runs.

Whirlpool washer stops for no reason.

i would be concerned teh the door/lid switch is not being activated, or is loosing contact withthe swtch mid wash causing unit to shut off. unitll the lid is lifted and closed to make better contact.. tyhe activator for the lid switch is actually the underside of the lefthand lid hinge. so if your able toreah under the lid while open you feel the metal lever, as you push and pull hte lid youll feel the lever move as well. with a hollow shafted screwdriver/1/4 nutdriver. place the driver over the metallever andslightly bend it toward the rear of the uni, so it makes better contact with the switch mounted tothe underside of the main top assembly
