This is a laser problem. Blu-ray drives use a laser with a magnifying lens, and any dust on them at all will cause problems. These lasers are also known to fail and cost around $50 for a new one on ebay. You can also do a fan test to blow out your system. this works much better than using an air compressor. To do this, turn off the power switch on the back of your console, hold your finger on the eject button, then flip the power switch on the back of the system to the "on" position. When the fan comes on release the eject button. The fan should then go into overdrive and run hard for about 20-30 seconds. Keep in mind, if your system is pretty dirty this is going to blow dust all over everything around it,
so do it away from other electronics! Good luck...

SOURCE: USB WONT READ

It will only read the usb drive if it's formated with FAT32 or FAT16.

Have you tried reformatting the drive yet?

If YOUR WARRANTY IS UP. taking the ps3 apart is easy as long as you have the rght screw drivers. getting the plate off is the hardest part. there is a hex screw under the warranty sticker. after removing the screw, simply slide the plate down and it will pull off. then there are about 8 philips head screws on the casing itself. after removing these screws the top is hinged on the front side of the system... lift the back untin it is at a 90 degree angle and and remove the flat wire that goes to the SDcard slots by lifting the black flapwith your fingernail, then the top is removed. at this point the disk drive is no longe fastened by any screws of clips. pull the plug from the left side toward the front out to diconnect that set of wires. then there is a big flat silver strip connected to the bottom of the drive. once again lift the black flap to release this strip.now you are ready to open the drive itself. there are 2 silver screws on the bottom rear of te drive and 3 black ones at the front. you will need a very small philips head screwdriver for these. then the gray casing will come off. thelense is not exposed yet. there are still 5 or 6 tiny black screws on the top of the drive that will remove the black plastic case THERE ARE 2 TINY WIRES COVERED BY TAPE BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO PULL ON THESE WHEN TAKING THE BLACK COVER OFF
. now the lenseis exposed. simply clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips and reassemble the machine. BE SURE NOT TO GET ANY OF THE WIRES PINCHED WHEN SETTING THE DRIVE BACK IN PLACE AND DONT FORGET THE LITTLE METAL GROUND ON THE RIGHT REAR OF THE DISK DRIVE. Does the light on the drive turn on? If not, try another USB slot.

I am assuming that you have a recent version of Windows. It should automatically load the drivers for the drive. If it does not, try the drive on someones machine. Does it work there?

If it does not work on someones machine, you likely have a bad drive. However, it could be that it needs to be formatted. [Write back if you need to manually format the drive].

It could be that it is just bad. However, that is fairly unusual.

Hope this gets you going.

My PS3 wont recognise 3.15 update from usb, formated usb to fat32 nothing works. Trying to swap the drive did the recomended instruction change and the system wont restart the new drive, went through all...

If your PS3 will not see the update most likely you did not save the file to the right place.

The link below is the the main instructions to properly do the install of the firmware update. However when you save the you will wanted to save the update in a folder named "PS3” on the root directory of the USB drive. Then in that folder make a folder called “UPDATE”. After you have done this then you will want to save the update in the “UPDATE” folder. Doing this should allow your PS3 to see the update.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

How to recover flashdrive transcened 4gb v30, it can detect but i can't open?

Files on a flash drive can be corrupted if it is not removed from the USB port properly.
Before removing the flash drive click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon and then click on the flash drive you want to remove and then remove the flash drive when the computer message says it is Safe to remove.
To restore the flash drive you may need to format the flash drive, but you will lose the data stored on the flash drive.
If you need the data on the flash drive this program may help: -

check the owners manual for the stereo and see what file system format you need to use on the flash drive i know i had the same problem when i changed radios worked on my old one but plugged into the new stereo wouldnt load had to unload the music and reformat the flash drive and then reload the music onto it that took care of the problem. where you have tried two different usb drives would say not likely you have bad drives

When i turn on my ps3 it does nothing else but go to the backroud

More than likely your hard drive was corrupted. The easiest way to fix it is to format the hard drive. There are LOTs of different ways to do this but the easiest way is to just hook the hard drive to a computer via a usb cable and then formating it through disc manager.

Here's a quick guide:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

It doesn't matter what file system your choose, just format it, and then pop it back into the PS3. It will recognise the hard drive as a new drive and then will reformat it again so that the PS3 can read it.

That's it! Problem solved.

The drives are SATA so if you don't have a usb cable you could always throw the drive into a laptop as long as it takes a SATA drive and use an XP or Vista CD and follow the same generall game plan: format the drive

OR you could swap the drive into someone else's PS3, it will do the same exact thing. It will recognize it as a new drive and will format it, then just pop it back into your old PS3 and boom. SUCCESS!!!

:)

That's probably the easiest way now that I think about it.
