Canon LBP 800 and Vista

Hi, new laptop running Vista Home Premium, bought USB to Parallel converter cable (Belkin) but can't get the printer working? Downloaded latest (W2000/XP) driver from Canon but to no avail. Any ideas out there?

    Dear Friend,

I have the same problem. I contacted canon personnel by email and got a rude answer that they have no plans to write a driver for vista. i think that a generic driver for low and medium volume lasre printers is a solution. I am using vista enterprise and i have drivers for everything except my canon lbp-800 printer. I shall let you know as soon as i find an answer to this enigma.

To solve this problem i used VMWare with Windows XP (also Ubuntu worked fine):
1. Install LBP-800 on vistual PC use real LPT1 and virtual one.
2. Set Cannon LBP-800 share mode.
3. Setup workgroup network:  my real computer and virtual.
4. Install LBP-800 on my real PC as a network printer

Just a quick note to say this is what Canon have to say...

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon product.

In response to your query, please be advised that this printer is not compatible with this operating system.

Yours sincerely,

Canon Support Centre

And my reply...
Dear Canon Support Centre, Thanks very much, you really do deserve the name Support. In my original email I said I knew there was no driver available at present, but could you tell me If or When you might make one available. Therefore I already Knew that you didn't have a driver available for this printer. And it only took you 3 days to tell me this. Now back to original question which still remains un-answered; (and please concentrate) When or If you are going to make a driver available for the LBP-800 ??? Thank You Aaron Pain.

Connect the printer to your system using the USB cable, power on the printer the power on your computer. when the computer is fully booted and you login, the system should automatically detect the printer as a new hardware. Problem printing from Dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista Home Premium to Epson Stylus Colour 1160 using Nikkai USB to Parallel Convertor. Cable supposed to be plug and play. Any pointers?

You pretty much said it when you mentioned "Other than buying the cable in the first place" I have never successfully used a USB to parallel converter cable on any system. My suggestion, asisde from getting a true USB printer, is a parallel port card

I have a new Compaq laptop running Vista home and an old samsung 4216f. I tried a parallel to usb and cannot get the printer to work. No parallel ports on laptop and no usb on printer. Any ideas?

If you have a home network, try a Print Server with parallel port. You will connect the printer to the print server via parallel, and the print server to a network hub/switch/router (any of the listed) via a network cable, and the computer to the hub/switch/router via network cable or wireless.

Cost should be around $20 - $60 depending on make/model.
