Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

My USB WD MyBook Essential Edition has suddenly stopped being recognised. It is still visible in the BIOS (listed as WD). It still appears in Device Manager. When I uninstall the drivers and Rescan for new hardware with the drive plugged in via USB, it installs the WD driver, which is set as a USB Mass Storage Device, so no issues there. The drive lights flash as normal during device detection and operating system boot. The disk is visible in Disk Management as Disk 1, which shows as Unknown and Unitialized. When I try to Initialize it, I get the pop-up error "Incorrect Function". Initialize is the only available function in Disk Management for that disk. Next I tried DISKPART:- DISKPART> list disk Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt -------- ---------- ------- ------- --- --- Disk 0 Online 233 GB 8 MB Disk 1 Online 0 B 0 B DISKPART> select disk 1 Disk 1 is now the selected disk. DISKPART> detail disk WD Disk ID: 00000000 Type : USB Bus : 0 Target : 0 LUN ID : 0 Read-only : No Boot Disk : No Pagefile Disk : No Hibernation File Disk : No Crashdump Disk : No There are no volumes. DISKPART> list DISKPART> list partition There are no partitions on this disk to show. I then tried to fix the master boot record:- C:\mbrfix> mbrfix /drive 1 fixmbr /vista You are about to Fix MBR, are you sure (Y/N)? Y Function failed. Error 1: Incorrect function. At this point I need some help. The drive doesn't seem to have physically failed as its being recognised as a USB device and is visible in DISKPART, however its clearly not booting properly, and I'm unable to fix the Master Boot Record using mbrfix at least. I even tried taking it out of the MyBook plastic casing (invalidating the warranty but who cares about that, its the data I'm interested in, not the cost of the drive!), and connected it using a SATA to USB dock, with the same results as detailed above (except the device driver installed is now a generic USB Mass Storage driver, not "WD"). Any assistance you could give me would be gladly appreciated!

Hi, I uninstalled the USB Root Hub devices and rescanned, at which point it re-installed the following drivers:-

    USB Root Hub (x6)
    USB Composite Device
    USB Mass Storage Device
    WD

All of which installed successfully. The drive lights flashed on the USB drive while it was installing the WD driver. However, when I then looked in Disk Management, Disk 1 still showed as Unknown, Not Initialized, as before. When I try to Initialize it, I still get that "Incorrect Function" pop-up.

Do you have any other ideas?

Hi,

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Root Hub
device(s), Action menu, "Uninstall", then Action menu,"scan for hardware
changes", to find the device drivers again automatically.
and

It would read like any other USB Drive in the market.Documentation and Software are preloaded on drive, The utilities Maxtor Backup and OneTouch Manager software applications are also included. Use USB 2.0 Y cable to connect to your computer. But before doing that Attach the power Cable for your adopter first.

Thanks

If your computer where the drive is connected via usb is a desktop better if you try to connect the external drive at the back usb port or just do try connecting the drive on different usb port and restart the computer....

WD My Book Essential -- Can't find drivers

It should not really need drivers in Win2K or Vista, you might have a problem with your USB drivers. Go into device manager, remove any devices under the USB heading and reboot. All the drivers should reinstall and hopefully your MyBook will come alive again. Otherwise, try the MyBook on a friend's computer, if it doesn't work there then the MyBook may be faulty itself.
