Question about Acer Aspire (AST180-US340B) PC Desktop

2 Answers

Windows xp home no user accounts on log in screen. I have a dell dimension 4400 with windws xp home edition sp2 and it was configured to boot directly to the desktop. No user accounts set up. I rebooted it and it went to the log in or welcome screen and prompts you to select a user account to get started. The problem is that there are no user accounts on the screen because they were never created. If I hit ctrl+alt+delete twice it goes to a log in window where none of the passwords i can think of will work. Can't log in using "administrator" either. I thought it might have been just a lost password issue and tried a set of directions using the restore cd and a loop hole to reset the password but that didn't work. After searching for solutions I found people with the same problem and some solutions that don't seem to apply to this particular issue. For example, it's not a lost password issue, it still won't boot in safe mode, and anything that has to do with using the start menu is out of the question because the computer will not boot past the welcome screen. If anyone knows about this problem or knows how to fix it without formating and re-installing< any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. P.S. I wonder where microsoft is on this one, so much for customer support.

You can try getting a original xp Home Spk 2 OEM cd. Then boot from the cd and go to the recovery console and type chkdisk /r and do a system file check. If that don't work you can try booting from the xp cd and do a windows repair. A virus, bad memory or hard drive could be the cause and probbly should be checked before doing a windows repair.

My Computer will turn on and go to the windows XP loading screen with the blue bars and will won't load up, it rarely does but when it gets to the log on user screen it freezes

Right after your POST screen goes off, before you get to Windows starting, try pushing the F8 key several times until you get the Windows boot options. Then try 'last known good configuration".
If that doesn't work, you can boot from the Windows installation disk and try to repair your Windows installation.Let me know what happens.
And good or bad, please rate my post?

Need step by step instructions to reinstall XP home edition recovery CD on dell 4400 32 system is damaged and I can not open anything

Insert your System CD (the one with the operating system on it). Boot up the computer and press F12 during the couple of seconds at the very beginning of the boot sequence to access the boot menu. You'll want to specify the CD-ROM as your 1st boot device. The system will boot from the system CD and you just follow the prompts to reinstall the operating system. Just realize, this will restore your computer to "out of the box" condition. You'll have to update Windows XP several times as well as your drivers. Also, ALL data that was on the computer will be lost forever.

Forgot password, need to reset

You can reset any user password by logging in using the Administrator account through Safe Mode. In Windows XP Home you cannot log into the Administrator account in normal mode.
When your computer is starting up, hold down the F8 key. This will bring you to a black screen with white text. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Safe Mode" and then hit enter. This will boot the computer into Safe Mode, which will look normal except the resolution will be very low. Log in as the Administrator (should have a blank password). Once logged in, open the Control Panel, then User accounts, then reset the password or whatever user you want. Reboot the machine to get back into normal mode.

Cannot login

Actually windows save default configuration in WINDOWS\repair directory and current configuration in WINDOWS\system32\config directory, so by replacing file in  WINDOWS\system32\config with file in WINDOWS\repair directory you restore windows configuration to first finish installation state with no user, driver installed and software installed, but your file, user folder, and installed program still exist but will not work and you will not lose your data.

If your laptop support booting from USB try portable Windows XP Live USB

if not, use NTFS DOS

Problems when installing sp2 on my dell 4400

Reboot and keep tapping on F8 into Safe Mode. You can select "Last known good configuration" or continue In safe mode and do a system restore to the day before you installed the SP3. To do a system restore, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System restore. Windows XP SP3 has some issues with certain programs giving the blue screen of death.

Limited User access will not open files in software program

boot into safe mode on xp. when you start the computer and the bios screen comes up start tapping the F8 key. it should take you to the boot selection screen. press your arrow keys to get to the selection "Windows Safe Mode" and press enter. when xp loads the login screen, there should be an admin account now. use that account to set users access to admin rights.
if you dont want that user to have admin rights but still start software that requires admin rights, try this. right-click on the program. go to run as... and choose administrator.

please let me know if this helped you :)

No rights to run control panel requires new instal need media

1. to gain rights do the following.

The built-in Administrator account is hidden from Welcome Screen when a user account with Administrator privileges exists and enabled. In Windows XP Home Edition, you can login as built-in Administrator in Safe Mode only. For XP Professional, press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen and input your Administrator password in the classic logon window that appears.
To have the Administrator account displayed in the Welcome Screen, try one of these methods:
Method 1: Using TweakUI Power Toy for Windows XP Download TweakUI from here: v2.00 for Windows XP | v2.10 for XP SP1 and above
Open TweakUI and click "Logon" option in the left pane. Put a checkmark against the option "Show Administrator on Welcome Screen". Click OK to close TweakUI. Logoff and see if Welcome Screen lists Administrator login. Changes are immediate and you can use the Winkey + L to switch back to Welcome Screen to see Administrator account is listed.
Use this procedure to hide/unhide any user account from the Welcome Screen. Please remember, you can still login to a hidden account using CTRL+ALT+DEL classic logon method, but cannot Fast User Switch to a hidden user account.
Method 2 - Manual registry edit
  • Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
  • Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList
  • Use the File, Export option to backup the key
  • Create a new DWORD Value named Administrator
  • Double-click Administrator, and set 1 as its data
  • Exit the Registry Editor.
For Windows XP Home Edition While you can configure Windows XP Home Edition to show Administrator account in the Welcome Screen, you cannot login as Administrator in Normal mode. Visit the following link for more information:
