If it is a new genuine up cartridge and not out of date contact hp and they will replace it. If it is an aftermarket unit it will always say that and may not work. There are good aftermarket brand and not so good.

HP Officejet 4500 Incompatible Black Cartridge

I have an HP officejet 4500. When I replace cartridge the printer reported Incompatible print cartridge. How can I get the printer to accept the cartridge and start printing again? The color cartridge is original to the printer and the black cartridge is the "new" one.

Incompatible cartridge message despite using correct cartridge

Most Laserjet Printers have "chips" mounted on the toner cartridge. This small circuit board can fail causing your error. If replacing your toner cartridge with an OEM HP Cartridge fixes it, then you know that was the problem. If the error persists after replacing the cartridge or swapping it from another printer with a known good cartridge then you'll need to call a tech

Incompatible cartridge

Hi,
Could be a bad cartridge too also.
Remove and reseat the cartridge, (power on)

On the front panel, press the Menu or Setup button (depending on the model).

Press the right arrow button (>) until Maintenance or Tools is displayed, and then press the OK or Enter button (depending on the model).

The Clean Print Cartridges message should display on the front panel.

Press Enter or OK to begin the cartridge cleaning process.

Clean the contacts on the device and cartridges

Using a cotton swab or lint free cloth with distilled or bottled water, clean the electrical contacts of the cartridge

Failing these, replace the cartridge.

Hope this helps

Incompatible Ink Cartridge notice with proper HP ink

These types of severe cartridge errors (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", "print cartridge(s) problem", etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #74 / 75 (or 74XL/75XL) cartridge(s) are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge, are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on most models which use HP 74/75 cartridges. Print Cartridge is Incompatible

Pleas be certain to remove the clear tape from the cartridge before inserting. Check the contact areas in the printer to ensure there is no tape residue or other material in this area. Go to the HP website and follow the troubleshooting instructions for this problem.
