Question about Craftsman 21 Hp 42" Deck, Ys 4500 Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

Have to overlap about half my cutting deck to get clean cut.

Craftsman LT1000 42 inch deck. Replaced the blades but still don't get even cut. I usually have to overlap my previous cut to make it look good.
Appears to be the right blade that is not cutting correctly. Any suggestions?

I have a craftsman lawn mower that will not cut even. I have replaced the spindles but that did not do any good. Any suggestions? It is a model 917.274031 with a 42 inch cut.

On a clean lever surface, raise the deck as high as it will go. With the motor OFF, look under the deck. One of the blade tips will be lower than the others. That will be the source of the problem.

If you hit something with the deck, the deck itsself may be bent, or the blade may be bent. If everything is really worn, the assembly holding the deck up may be worn on one side, causing it to sag on that side, but this should be visible to the naked eye.

Went out to cut grass and the blades will not engage and when I put it in gear it does not move. Belts are intact. I cleaned the deck of dirt and grass. Still nothing. Just replaced the cable to engage the blades last year. Cable seems to be working.

My machine does not cut the grass evenly. The right blade does not lift the grass the same as the left. New blades, new belts. Deck is clean underneath. Spindle bearings are quiet and blade turns freely....

Does the mechanism that raises & lowers the deck do it evenly at both sides, if not, is there any way of adjusting it? Where there any spacers that you might have missed before fitting the blades?

I have 11 years old Murray (42 inch deck). After deck adjustment still leaves uncut portion of the grass between blades. Should I exchange the blades (I have not done it for many years, but I sharpened...

On a two blade deck, such as yours, there is generally an overlap between the cutting coverage of the blades so that you do not leave a mohawk. This does not work well on turns however, and the sharper the turn, the more grass is left. Overcoming that issue brings you up to a 3 blade deck. If your mower is leaving a strip of uncut grass while cutting in a straight line, somehow you are running blades for a smaller deck, thus there is no overlap. The mandrels are offset, one slightly in front of the other so that the blades do not hit each other. I would measure under the deck and see how long a blade could be and still fit within the deck and not strike the other blade, then ask a parts store to sell you something longer than what you have now.

you need to bring all 3 blades to point at each other on the deck
do they all look the same?
aLL 3 should meet each other evenly with no more than 1/8th inch difference high or low point to point.
the stump strike could have bent the deck on that side
also be sure the fin side of the blades are pointing towards the deck when installed.
check that your deck is level on a level surface and the air pressure in all for tires are up to recommended pressure.
most of the time 14psi front and 10psi rear

My deck cuts shoter on the rt,ie uneven

Check your tire pressures:
10 psi. for rear tires.
14 psi. for the front.

Note that according to MTD:
Making sharp right hand turns. Twin-blade mower decks are designed with the discharge on the right side and two side-by-side blades. The side-by-side twin blade decks have the left hand blade positioned slightly forward and in front of the right blade. This provides cutting overlap when traveling in a straight line. As a result, the tractor should mainly operated making primarily left hand turns when cutting. During left turns this cutting overlap is maintained. If turning right when, it is possible to negate this overlap and leave an uncut strip.

Craftsman 42 inch riding lawn mower is not cutting evenly

The first thing to check is your blades. If one is bent, it will never cut even. It happens a lot hitting roots, antbeds, etc. Mulching blades will bend easier than a straight blade. It's best to take them off and lay one on top of the other to see if they're bent.
