I am having issues trying to reboot this system. It keeps restarting on me and then the screen goes hay wire. I was doing great with it and then all of a sudden the screen goes blank and then comes back on with something that looks like a checker board.

I have the same black screen problem on a ACER aspire 5670. All is working but the screen is black. Fn+F6 won't work, but after a few Fn+Z² and open, the screen would come back to life.

Typically when something like that happens, it involves the video driver in Windows. (Or whatever operating system you are using.) The driver could have crashed which can sometimes just break the driver altogether.

This is where using Safe Mode comes in handy when trying to boot your Windows OS. Vista does have a Safe Mode. It allows you to boot into your Windows installation - minus the drivers being loaded. This is done by pressing F8 continuously after you boot your system until you get some boot options from Windows.

You'll see Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc. Select Safe Mode and boot to your desktop if it will let you.

Remember that your drivers are NOT installed at that point and things will look different and/or work differently. This gives you the opportunity to uninstall drivers that may be corrupted and reinstall the drivers with either a fresh version or a NEWER version. (I suggest using the newest drivers you can find.)

If your system can not boot into Safe Mode, then that suggests a deeper problem with either your OS or even your actual hardware. (Pray that it's not the latter.)

Try booting Vista with Safe Mode before trying anything else for the time being. Let us know what happens here.

I'm afraid that this is the first step to figuring out the problem.

If you DO get into Vista, uninstall your video driver and reboot the machine. Get into Safe Mode again and install the newest one you can find.

Here is the list of drivers for your machine in a PDF document I managed to dig up on their website.

Good luck for now. Let us know what happens.
