My 3 yr. old Sansui TV turns off by itself. The time intervals are random. Sleep mode is definitely off. I have an electronics background but no specific knowledge of troubleshooting TVs. Any tips on what to look for besides bad solder connections would be helpful. I would like to take a shot at the repair before sending it in for service. If this is a thermal issue, is there a likely culprit?

This is wierd the kids played with your remote and you cannot get it out of sleep mode. Well here is somthing to try. You would take back cover off but here is the disclaimer (HIGH VOLTAGE INSIDE CAN CAUSE INJURY INCLUDEING DEATH) iF YOU NOT QUALIFIED OTAKE IT TO A TECH IF ITS SOMETHING MNOR IT WILL BE DONE WHILE YOU WAIT AND WILL NOT CHARGE YOU OUT THE YANG FOR A FEE. But if you inclined chekc the power supply unit and see if it is giving the correct current to the TV if not replace it.
I think you would have to turn off the sleep timer mode completely or increase its ON time span, say to 4 hours or so
or the lenth of time you have the TV on for. If that does not fix it then it sounds like a STANDBY MODE fault problem.
Hope this helps.
