Question about Garden

1 Answer

Hello, I have a Craftsman Model 917.377790 lawnmower, power-propelled, with Honda 5.5 HP engine. I replaced the belt that provides power to the rear wheels. The belt is ''caged'' by other parts, so I removed a clutch-like mechanism above the blade that seems to have the purpose of slipping to protect the drive shaft and engine if something stops the blade from turning. This mechanism does not appear in the diagrams or descriptions in the owner's manual, which otherwise seems complete and accurate. My problem is this: the mower blade attaches to a part of this ''clutch'' mechanism with two bolts. The clutch mechanism is connected to the drive shaft with a single bolt with the number 10 cast into its head. Reassembly was not difficult and no parts were left over. Now when I try to mow, this bolt either jiggles or twists loose, eventually dropping the blade and clutch assembly into the grass. I used the mower for three years without this thing coming loose. There were no lock washers or jiggle-proof washers involved. How do I keep this assembly from dropping off?

Sounds like you lost the drive key out of the crankshaft, it's usually half-moon shaped and keeps the blade hub and the crankshaft turning together, the bolt just holds it all on the end of the crankshaft.
Hope this helps!

I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.
