My whirlpool cabrio platinum top load washer is less than a year old. I live in a new home that was built in 2013. I have a water softner that has been installed almost 6 months. I am also on MUD district water. When I start my wash cycle and water is mixing with the liquid detergent and raining down on the clothes I get a vicious rotten egg smell. To my knowledge and sight the water completely drains from the tub. My drain is built in the wall. I have a u shaped drain hose and I have smelled around the drain and I don't smell anything that I shouldn't. I ensure that the lid is up so the basket may dry. If I use a top of the line detergent the smell is not as bad, but the smell is still there. I have done the recommended afresh clean cycle, but it has not helped the smell. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
As someone who has had a deep well drilled and found water, but water contaminated with iron and sulfur, I can tell you first hand about the rotten egg smell. The water softener will remove the iron that can turn clothes orange, but doesn't do anything to remove the rotten egg odor. You will need a charcoal (carbon) water filter to eliminate the sulfur smell.
SOURCE: Rotten Egg Odor from washer
We had the same problem with our washer and discovered that there is a filter that is located under the front panel just below the door. When you take the front panel off it is located on the right hand side. We have found money, those new wash/dryer sheets, and small toys. It saved us money from a professional coming to empty our filter!

This is a common problem. There is a build up of grime in the hidden crevices of the machine. To help resolve this problem, put a cup and a half of good dishwashing power in the machine and then place it on HOT full capacity. Then place fill the fabric softener with bleach. Run the unit half of the wash cycle and then stop it and allow it to soak for 15 minutes. Then allow it to finish the cycle. Repeat this process once a week for 3 weeks. Also you may want to stop using fabric softener if you are using it. The softener acts like a surfactant and adheres to the upper crevices of the machine. After a while bacteria starts to build. The bacteria varies in composition; but a very little known bacteria thrive in these humid areas and gives off the odor you described. The bacteria is commonly known as SRB’s. Here is some more information on this subject. http://www.nesc.wvu.edu/ndwc/articles/QandA/OTsp00_Q_A.pdf

sounds like you have a broken motor coupling between the motor and transmission
SOURCE: Our Clothes smell musty and the washer smells too
I checked the whirlpool web site and typed in "musty washer" for a search of the site. They gave directions on how to run a cleaning cycle on the machine (whether your washer has a special button for it or not) This REALLY helped my machine. They also had trouble shooting tips for keeping the musty smell away.

Hope your filter is clean. Don’t wait for the
machine to jam to
look into your filter.
You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits of soap and
other such
things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this
product, it
works great on all front loaders. Use very hot water with the Affresh
pellet
with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle. Also helps with any
stagnant water smells. Put the Affresh
pellet inside the machine, not in the soap dispenser.
You can give me a ‘very helpful’ rating for the
free help,
can't you. Thanks.
