We have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire SE with a 2.4L motor. Yesterday we noticed there is oil in the coolant reservoir, but no antifreeze in the oil. Got any suggestions?

We did have a leak at the drivers side that has been fixed.

Flush the coolant system and refill then fun and see if it appears again, it could just be from the leak you had.

SOURCE: antifreeze/coolant leaking from under passenger side dash

If it's your heater core, unless you're a mechanic you probably should get professional help. The heater core is located on the firewall and many parts need to be replaced to get to it. Do you see water on the floor inside the vehicle, Many times a heater core will leak inside.

SOURCE: Ford explorer 2000 antifreeze coolant reservoir

Ensure that there is no leak, checking all the coolant lines and the radiator.
If there is no leak and the car is consuming coolant liquid, then you may have a faulty head gasket.
What happens is that the head gasket allows coolant leaking and being vapourised inside the engine.
To find out if your head gasket is starting to go you can perform a compression test.

Regards.

I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire I don't know how much antifreeze put in it they say you can't add water to it so how many gallons of antifreeze do I put in it thank you in advance

If the system is empty, it will usually hold about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 gallons of liquid. You can add water, but you want to make sure it is distilled water. you do not want to use tap water as the minerals will clog up your system causing more expensive future repairs. But you also do not want straight water as the boiling and freezing points are not optimal. Your best bet is to use premixed universal coolant.

Why us my 2007 pontiac torrent losing coolant?

When the oil was changed, did anyone reset the oil life monitor? It needs to be reset every time an oil change is done. That would explain why it is telling you to change the oil so soon.If you have a bad head gasket, antifreeze mixes with your oil. Check the oil on the dipstick. Does it look normal? Check under the cap where you pour the oil into the engine. Is the oil cap wet on the bottom? If yes, and the oil on the dipstick does not look normal, the head gasket is defective. It most likely would leak where the thermostat is located, since the gasket seal was taken out and replaced with a new one. It may not have been done correctly. There may be a puncture in a hose. There could be a crack in the coolant reservoir tank. The thermostat must be stuck in the open position or the thermostat was installed backwards for it to take that long to heat up. Refill the coolant reservoir tank with antifreeze and water before driving the car to avoid severe engine damage.

2001 pontiac sunfire will not hold any antifreeze, why and whats wrong with my car????

General advice:U must track the leak .How much it takes to loose the coolant?.If the coolant shows under the car must identify the tubes clamps that need tighten or replace. If a radiator related problem need clean/solder/replace.If leaky water pump, replace. If no trace of coolant ceck the oil.If is color altered(milky)u have a head gasket ahead (with head revision)or a broken engine block/piston cyclinder. If the oil is ok,ceck the smoke:whity smoke means coolant in the pistons head.Again best guess:head gasket (can leak also in the intake manifold).Very rare coolant shows in some cars in the power stearing oil (!?) track the tubes.Tip:colored coolant (green...)is better visible in leaks.Tip:water coolant may show rusty spots where dissapearing (radiator, expansion deposit, pitched tube).Hope u deal it.Cheers.

I cannot find where to put brake fluid in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire

Hi, the reservoir is in the engine compartment just in front of the driver. Please let me know if you don't see it there. The reservoir is white as in the pic below.

I just recently changed the heater core and added antifreeze to my 1990 Buick Skylark (2.5L) and noticed recently that the fluid level in my antifreeze reservoir is low. Wanted to know what the antifreeze...

There should be a fluid capacity chart in your owners manual. You can also just go ahead and fill the reservoir to the proper level with coolant and keep an eye on it. If after a week you notice it low again and you still can't find the spot where the leak is, I'd try using some good old stop leak. Also, take a look at your oil to see if it has coolant in it. If so, it will have a brownish grey sludge gathering around the oil filler cap. If that's where your coolant is leaking, you may have a leaking head gasket and that would explain why you can't find a leak elsewhere..

Antifreeze does not stay in 1996 potiac sunfire, where is thermostat located please

mostly cars, thermostat is located at the bottom of the engine block on the right. at the bottom of your radiator locate the coolant exit hose to the engine block. it is between that of hose of the radiator to your engine block. you are going to flush all the coolant or get a basin to save your coolant. you will see a small round piece and take it off. thats it

Where to refill a flushed radiator on 1996 pontiac sunfire

If there is no radiator cap on the radiator, that would indicate to me that the procedure for flushing and re-filling is done with the motor running, and the heat on high. Filling is done by pouring antifreeze into the coolant reservoir.

Where do you put the radiator antifgreeze. Pontiac Sunfire 1996

Well you may have one or possibly two places to put the antifreeze. Both will be located on the passinger side under the hood. You may have a radiator cap this will be in the very front and then a little farther back and farther left will be your coolant bottle. It is white plastic and will have a full cold and a full hot marks on it. Just a word of caution only remove caps when the car has not been running for several hours and is cold.
