Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

I have a penguin rooftop ducted system with analog thermostat, the thermostat board went bad, so I got a refurbed one, installed the refurbed one, but when I switched it on , no leds, nothing after about an hour the system tried to start, but didn't. No leds lit. I switched to High fan only, and same thing. Whats up? there is 12v to the board.

If you have no leds, then you have a power supply problem. I am assuming that you have the Dometic Electronic Control Thermostat with the ribbon cable connection. Check for 12V power at the control board in the air conditioner, Red 12V+ and Black 12V-. Make sure polarity is correct. If you have power there then check the number 1 and number 10 pins on the ribbon. The voltage should be the same. If they are not, then you have a bad control board, not thermostat.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Bad run capacitor or bad compressor. If you hear an occasional click from the compressor try a new run cap and then a hard start kit. Otherwise it's more economical to purchase a new unit.

Your choices are another Dometic or a Coleman
I prefer the Coleman But the amount of extra cooling you will get by stepping up to a 15K unit will probability not be worth the added cost

Problem w/ dometic penguin a/c. upgrade kit?

You know what, I have never ran into that yet in 15 years, so I think your best bet would be to go to, (dometicusa.com) and send then a quick inquiry to confirm, what would be required, they are usually pretty helpful believe it or not.

A/C starts, goes immediately to heat

Unfortunately, your rear unit is calling for heat. If you put the rear unit on heat pump mode, does it then cool?
moz-screenshot-2.jpgmoz-screenshot-3.jpgThe reversing valve is energized in the cool mode of these AC's. So there is no real way to bypass it. I would check the thermostat and the control board in the unit to make sure that the switches are set correctly.

In the service manual section of the dometic/Rooftop RV Air Conditioner section. I have posted service manuals for the Heat Pump and the Comfort Control.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

Compressor starts, but airhandling motor does not

Sounds like you may have a bad fan capacitor or a bad fan motor. Remove the inside cover from the air conditioner and access the squirrel cage fan or, remove the shroud from the top to access the fan that way. Have someone turn the thermostat on as you spin the fan motor by hand. If the motor starts and runs, then you have a bad capacitor. If the fan motor still does not come on, then there are a couple of possible problems.

When you turn the thermostat to fan, do you hear an audible click in the control unit of the ac? If so, then you know that the thermostat is sending 12V to the fan relay on the board.

I think the motor just may be frozen up. Try spinning the motor by hand and see what happens. Again, if it starts, then just lube the shaft points on the motor with some WD-40 and all should be fine. If the fan motor starts and then after the cycle, does not restart, then you definitely have a bad capacitor.

Hope this helps,

Jeff

RV AC/HP Rooftop 15,000 btu Penguin

Is there by any chance a cool air duct or register, or maybe return air duct near the thermostat, or perhaps on opposite wall,(behind it) that may be throwing it off? Have you tried just draping a small towel or facecloth over it to see if that changes anything? I've had one that acted similar in a 12 wide, and it turned out to be that the return air was directly behind it, and caused cool air to rush in around hole for wiring of thermostat, causing it to kick in & out about every 5 minutes. Heard a whistle when I was checking thermostat, and a light went on in my head. Plugged the hole up good & all was well. have you tried this number & link to contact tech assitance at dometic for some advice on it? Phone 1-800-544-4881 and ask for technical assistance.
