Panasonic AG-1970 video out problem

I purchased an AG-1970 from ebay which works fine except for the video output from this unit is just garbage. It does not matter if it is s-video out or coax. Also does not matter if the input is from tape or tuner. The best description of the picture is a vcr that is set to ch3 and a tv tuned to ch4. I have checked for leaking caps in the power supply as well as all boards and found none. I have also felt for burning hot IC's or VR's that might be the problem and can't find any either. I have pulled boards to see any effect that may have and I have found one board that seems to control the video signal output but there is not much on in the way of circuits. So I guess my question is, is this a problem anyone has seen before with this unit or similar units and might have an idea where to start? I do not have fancy test equipment.

Re: Panasonic AG-1970 video out problem

There is a y/c separator in the AG-1970 which fails and produces all sorts of strange video symptoms. unfortunately, they are no longer available from Panasonic.

This unit just needs the standard belt job. The rubber parts probably got old sitting around in the back romm of the university.

Could do it yourself if you are the like to take things apart type. Otherwise, a repair shop can do it very affordably.

No video output

AG-DS555s are plagued by capacitor failure problems on all the video boards in the deck. Replacement of all surface mount electrolytic capacitors is the solution, but before you try that, give the heads a good cleaning. It's amazing what a miniscule amount of dirt on the heads will do.

Colour Noise and Dim Display

you may have a slightly damaged power supply...although swapping the main supply chassis may solve, I have seen front panels that have an additional supply section. look on the front panel board for any TP's and probe with an O-scope. if you see a TP that may also show (+ xx V), where xx is a numerical value-may be one x only, the scope must show a straight horizontal line that is shifted vertically away from its normal (ground) position. that confirms a DC value present. then determine the DC value of the shift. Another possibility, since you invested, is to search ebay for a second unit for part swapping. look for as-is units.
