My toro 20624 lost self-propelling after the blade hit a baseball

The rear wheel drive transmission was working before the mower ran over a baseball. When the blade hit the baseball, there was a big jolt, but the mower was still running except that it lost self-propelling.

SOURCE: self propelled motor mower runs but doesn't drive

problem could be:-
1 broken drive belt or it is slipping ,if so simply tighten drive cable
2 drive pulleys worn allowing belt to slip

SOURCE: my toro self propelled isn't self propelling

It may just be a matter of adjusting the cable. Sometimes they dont get them adjusted just right from the factory, heres what you do. Locate the plastic shroud in front of the push mower that covers the drive unit.Determine which screwdriver or torx bit is needed to remove shroud and remove it. After removal you will see a pulley with belt around it, as you pull the handle back to engage self propel you should see the pulley move into the belt to put tension on the belt. You can do this with it running to see if enough tension is being put on the belt,if not, locate the cable end where the small bracket holds the cable in place. Loosen the cable bracket and move cable until you have correct tension again, hope this helps.

I have a toro self propelled rear wheel drive mower, I changed the belt and now it won't let me pull the mower backwards. The self propelled works great.

If the new belt is not the same length as the old one it will cause it the not release properly. Even one eighth of an inch too short.

Why do the wheels lock up on my self propelled 22" recycling mower

Sounds like they need cleaning & oiling. Check that nothing is keeping it from moving. I have ran over string or cord before & got caught and wrapped around wheel.

I have a Toro mower made in 5/09 self propel system it grinds when you pull it in reverse. The selp propel is not working. The belt is on. and it seems to be only the left rear wheel? The cable is not...

Yes it is the transmission. A Mower shop will charge you about $225 to fix.. I order parts online and fixed mine for $90. Transmission consist of 3 gears which turns the rear wheels to self-propel.

Self propell not working right

Leave aside all the puffery about 3-1 and such, you described a front wheel drive (pull) walk-behind (FWD), but are asking why the rear wheels won't propel. When you push down the hand grip the front wheels should spin free. Whan you lower from wheels by releasing pressure on hand grips, turning wheels lowered to ground should propel the mower along with its unpowered rear wheels now turning be ground contact. Reminder, never, ever lift rear drive wheels of any mower off the ground while walking behind with engine running:
  1. You could be struck by blade propelled object.
  2. You could pull mower and spinning blade backward onto your feet.
  3. You could lose balance and be pulled forward in a fall.
Contemporary FWD mowers are recognized by a black chain housing on deck top leading from engine to left front of deck. RWD propelling chains are situated underneath deck so cannot be seen from above.

When raising the bar to start to cut the Toro makes a terrible squeaking and the engine cuts. Help. The lawnmover will start. It is model 2622-21" rear bagger. We cut the back lawn and went to cut...

Is this a self propelled? Since it will run, blade spinning, the bar you are mentioning to start cutting is for the self propelled drive. The terrible squeaking is probably the belt slipping due to something causing the wheel to bind. Check for the ability to turn the drive wheel by hand. Then check under the cover for any binding.

I hope this helps you out.

Toro 20016 self propel

If you take the wheels off and remove the belt from the small pulley on the the front axle underneath the pulley you should see a small transmission. You usually can split this unit in half . You will see two gears and sometimes one plastic and one metal. The plastic one is usually the culprit. Hope this will help you out. Donnyb60
