Question about Vornado 215 Classic Stand (Pedestal) Fan

1 Answer

Our Vornado 215 fan gives off a burning smell when operated. If you turn it off, the motor feels very hot. We'd like to get rid of the burning smell so we can use it in the bedroom. Any suggestions?

I would not use this fan any further. It sounds like the motor is burning a coil or has already done so. This is a huge fire hazard.

My tredmill works but after few mins I get burnt smell?

Treadmills are relatively simple machines, which means a burning smell can be quickly determined.

Check your treadmill belt for wear. Try to find where on the treadmill feels hot when you smell the burning. It could possibly be the electric motor or wiring giving out under load.

My fan won't turn on a ballon string got stuck and I took the string off and now it won't turn on

You probably burned the motor up.

Or.. there is still more string in there. Take the fan apart, take the motor out... try to turn it by hand. Does it turn? If not, double check for more string flattened out and stuck btwn the spindle and the machine.

Smell the motor for the distinct smell of hot/melting, etc.

Vornado Circulating Fan - motor will run but blades will not turn.

Does the motor spin, but the blade is not turning?
The motor has a D shaped shaft. If the hole in the blade that the shaft goes in is rounded, then the blade will spin. In that case you need a new blade. Vornado can supply that.

Heater in 2001 kia spectra stoped working

The burning smell is most likely an issue with the blower motor. These small motors have a hard life and the windings can lose the insulation and short out, hence the burning smell. Another problem can arise if the air intake has filled with leaves and other matter which can be ignited by the fan speed resistor creating the smoke. As this matter rots down, it creates chemicals which can erode the insulation on the motor and cause burning and the eventual failure of the motor. The fan speed resistor is a bank of wirewound or solid state resistors wired across the fan motor which give the individual fan speeds. If these fail then you would lose the fan as well. Search out the fan housing as the resistor is usually fitted into this housing to keep it cool. NEVER turn the fan on if this resistor is out of the housing as it WILL get hot and It can cause a nasty burn..the resistor can have upto 7 wires plugged into it but as to it's exact location, that you will have to find on your own..

The fan inside is having a hard time rotating...starting to smell. what gives?

If the fan motor is quite hot to the touch when it is running and the smell is like something burning and the fan blade isn't rubbing on the housing then the fan motor bearing are most likely worn out. If that is the case then the fan motor is bad and needs to be replaced.

My new hunter fan feels hot when its on high and smells funny but its only been used just this once since i installed it a couple of days ago is this normal

Yes. The outer paint on your fan motor gets heated up first time and when new it does give off some kind of smell. But after a few hours of use the smell should disappear. Smell can come from the winding also.

Fan not running on outdoor unit

yes it could be the capacitor open or shorted possiblity.
check the motor to be sure it turns free?(disconnect power first)
check with a voltage meter the wires coming from the fan motor to its power source and see if there is the required voltage there for it to operate?
Feel the motor is it hot? or not hot?
If it is hot then you could have a shorted capacitor causing the motor to overheat
check for a burning smell also.
Take an ohm reading across the motor wires after you turn the power off and disconnect the motor wires.
pick your two power wires from the motor and ohm them do you get a reading? the motor is good
no reading motor is bad or overheated and out on internal overload..

I have a Ruud Acheiver 90, I'm having some problems, the rollout (burner) limit switches are opening, and there is an electrical burning smell. It seems that sometimes the squirrel cage isn't kicking on,...

Thanks for your question,
yup your fan motor is bad, if you need to manually start it each time then the motor winding are bad and it is not getting the air across the coils, which in turn are over heating, thus causing a burning smell, and then tripping your limits, you need to replace this motor ASAP, before it does cause a fire, if the limits ever fail !! I hope this was helpful for ya, if it was please give this a rating, thanks again,

Motor stopped

hi,

you can try and oil it, unplug it and begin taking it apart, your destination is the fan motor, dust around the motor and I would recommend using regular automotive 10w30 motor oil on that motor, put some in a small bowl and use a small baster or equivalent and oil around both ends of the motor shaft(where it protrudes from the motor) behind the fan blades and behind it, look closely with a flashlight where the motor attatches to the back guard. try get some oil in there and within the motor housing to the inner bearing areas if possible. My guess is that its sealed from the factory, but you can try, those fans are the best on the market and have a long warranty, heres a link to the manual
