Try the following:
Use a different USB port on the computer.
Reinstall the chipset driver for the computer.
Try use any other USB device on the same USB port.
If you are still getting the same error message then you need to contact Canon, as the motherboard of the camera is defective.
Thanks

This error usually comes when the data cable that you use to connect your cam to the computer is not functioning properly. Try changing the USB cable / restart the laptop and put the laptop on AC power. You can also try to update the drivers from http://www.ixitools.com/downloads/dup/driverskit/DriverUpdaterPro.exe
right click on My computer on the desktop and click on Properties. Select Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. Check if you see your camera listed there once it is connected? Most probably it should be in the Imaging devices or the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Check if it has some Red or Yellow mark before it?

I tried all of these, except the new cable as I am in a hotel and the shops are closed at the present time. What further suggestions? I plugged the camera in and got the same error message.
I tried redownloading the driver and restarting and I get the same results!
