After aligning the printer switches itself off permanently

I replaced the cartridges and did the alignment (printed out the page and put on the scanner glass) but then I get an error message and the printer switches itself off. And I cannot switch it back on - it simply flicks on and off again in a fraction of a second (with the display very briefly lightening on and off) and then nothing. I got my husband to sort it out with HP support and they could not help. They sent a replacement printer and when I did the first alignment before using the printer for the very first time - guess what happened??? So I kind of had it with HP all-in-one .....
