Question about Zanussi ZX99 / 5 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Open Question

My ZNB 3450S zanussi fridge freezer alarm keeps going off

Freezer is overheating, when it gets to -11c alarm goes off, fridge section is ok. I would have thought the thermostat would turn on the compressor and/or fan inside the freezer to lower the temp. but it doesn't. After a long time everything eventually seems to get going and it brings down the temperature in the freezer, but not before the food has started to defrost! Engineer came out and put mastic round the pipe at the rear of freezer and it's ok in the winter but in warm weather the alarm is going off all the time. Appliance is 18 months old

SOURCE: Zanussi ZX99/5SI

I had this problem with my ZX99. In my case it was caused by faulty temp sensors not making the defrost system kick into place. The defrost cycle works by heating an element for every week or so for a few minutes.

Fridge not working but freezer is. Why?

I presume it is a combined fridge/freezer. the reason for this is probably because it uses 2 compressors one for the fridge and one for the freezer. sounds like the fridge has lost its gas or the thermostat has packed in. turn the thermostat up and see if you can hear the compressor start up. if not then you will have to either replace the fridge freezer or get a repair person out to look at it.

Often these have door alarms. If the door isn't completely sealed shut then it will alarm and cause the temperature/thermostat to blink to warn of "warm" temperature inside the fridge

Freezer stays cold but fridge has been warm. I turn the thermostat to off for a day and then everything is ok for a week. Sounds like the fan is frozen solid when fridge doesn't work( no sound) Th

If there is no cooling at all on the fridge section but the freezer works then it is confirmed that the compressor and gas pressure is OK. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Freezer turns of in cold weather

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.

Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.

If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.

Good luck!

If you have the door alarm continuously beeping you will need to try and hard reset the unit. Turn the circuit breaker for 4-5 minutes and retry the unit. But if still the 5 beeps are coming on, then its problem with control panel board. Its not detecting door closed.------- The control board needs to be inspected.---------- If the doors are not getting closed, that means some cold air is getting out and thts why temp is not getting set. This is one possibility of temperature problem.-------- But if both doors are closed tight and no issue of air getting lost out, then other possibility for this problem is weak compressor.-----------

The compressor just keeps on running. The problem is weak compressor. The refrigerant in the compressor is got low.The compressor is weak. The compressor needs to be replaced.-------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.------------ But as you mentioned that freezer not cooling this indicates problem with compressor. When compressor cools the freezer section then fridge section gets cold.If freezer section is not getting properly cold then fridge section will not cool properly/.So the problem relates to compressor.---------- In the compressor there is a refrigerant called FREON.With the help of this Freon the compressor cools the freezer section.Freon is a gaseous type cooling agent. The compressor will stop cooling when coolant gets leaked from its chamber.--------- Again recharging the Freon is possible, but the cost for that recharging is approx the cost of new compressor. So its always advisable to get compressor replaced.Because new compressor has warranty for few years.------------------ You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

THe fridge on our fridge freezer isnt working

If the freezer is getting cold and working properly, but freezer is not the it can be defrost issue.------------------ The procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.--------- Try manual defrost reset procedure: ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. The defrost board and the defrost thermostat/heater is not functioning properly and it has to be checked and replaced. The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board. Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board. First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. You can get required parts from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

The fridge and frezzer are not getting cold at all the lights are on and the is an alarm that keeps beeping, we have hoovered the coils at the back still no differance.

Turn the unit off using the interior switch and unplug the unit for 20 minutes. then plug it back in. With the unit turned turn the thermostat (cold switch) to somewhere in the middle, listen to see if the compressor is running.
If it is running, feel the copper tube coming out of the compressor.
If it gets warm, The Compressor is functioing. The freezer section will get cold first and then the cold air will flow into the refrigerator section.
Let me know if this helps.

Burnt smell inside freezer.

Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.
