Question about Sony (DWQ58A) DVD RW Dual Layer Burner

2 Answers

Dvd rom I have a Dell XPS M1210 Laptop with a SONY DVD+RW DW-Q58A. I've never had any problems playing DVD's or Music cd's. As of a few days ago, however, the drive will only play DVD's. When a CD in inserted, you can hear the CD spinning and then a series of thumps (much like when you try to read a floppy that's corrupted). I've removed all medial related software excpet for the latest version of Windows Media player but I still have the problem. So if the probmel is not a dirty lens (since DVD's are read fine), a mechanical issue (the CD still spins), or a software issue, what could the problem be? Diagnostics says the DVD rom device is "Working Properly". Please help. Thanks

The xps series of laptops always come with this sort of dvd drive problems. get dell engineer to your house and get it replaced if you warranty is still valid. otherwise you might mostprobably only use original cd's and but all type of dvd's will work.

My DVD rw (DW-Q58A) in VGN FS42w won't read CD (both music and data) although it plays DVD video and recognizes blank DVD-R.

It happens if the lens becomes weak. I advice you get an external DVD-RW.
I hope you find this solution is helpful.

It won't see a blank disk or write to it

CD-ROM and DVD-ROM. ROM stands for "Read Only Memory". On the other hand, CD-RW, DVD-RW stand for "Read/Write". So, if the specs of your laptop say that you only have a DVD-ROM, not COMBO or something ending in RW, then you laptop's optical drive is simply not built for writing to discs.

Sony Q58A will play DVD but not audio cd or data cd. Help!!!!!!!

Are you sure that you have the file type associated in your Windows operating system to a Music player like Windows Media or iTunes? This may be the most common reason that music CDs won't play.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

Dell Cd/Dvd burner not working properly

I have a Dell XPS 400 that's about 3 years old. I have a DVD reader and a DVD-RW device. The former works - the latter takes forever to read discs (particularly DVD data discs.)

I'm starting to think some of the generic DVD-RW devices Dell uses in its computers are prone to early failure. The DVD-RW in my XPS-400 was called "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N".

I'm going to try cleaning it, and then just swap it out for a better device.
