Annoying whirring/humming sound from the evaporator fan recently started on my $7000 built in GE side-by-side refrigerator and it's driving me crazy. All internet signs point to some sort of mother board issue that's causing the fan to spin at a speed that leads to this annoyinhg pitched sound. GE is coming out this week but am fearfult that I am going to hear the "operating as designed" arguement. Is this a known issue by GE? Any official docs that I can point them to to ensure it gets fixed? the noise is driving me crazy.

Well, my GE side by side does the same thing...I actually changed the evaporator fan motor and it made the noise about a week after I changed it, then it quit for about 6 months, then started doing it again...I actually just looked this up because as I type its doing it...There is one simple solution to this problem...Dont buy GE products anymore...I think they are garbage...I am not going to change the fan every six months for $75 dollars just because GE makes cheap ****.

The evaporator fan is located behind the shroud that is behind the ice maker...You have to remove the ice maker, then remove the shroud, and it is behind that...It wont matter though...Like I said, I put a brand new fan in and its only a matter of time before it starts doing it again.

I believe you will trace this noise back to the evaporator fan motor inside the freezer making the noise. If you agree that the noise is coming from the evaporator fan motor inside the freezer it is not the motor that is responsible. Your model has a Main Mother Board on the outside rear wall of the freezer down low (about 10 screws hold square cover on over board). The Main Board is causing your noisy evaporator fan motor. Use caution when handling any electronic circuit board. Follow antistatic cautions. Static electricity in your body can damage these valuable circuit boards.

    I'm sorry Ronald1,

I did not check till now. The GE mother board is a very strange board. It has been to me and many other technicians very baffling due to the many strange things it has been known to cause. Anything from strange evaporator fan motor (freezer fan motor) noises to erratic dispenser functions as well as interior light abnormal operations.

It may be that the motor is given the proper DC voltage then an improper AC voltage or for some other reason but normally that is the cause of the strange and annoying freezer fan motor noise.

If you get this and find I am correct please come back and rate me as a FixIt.

Whining sound from motor on Frigidaire upright freezer

Hi: It sounds like you bought a frost free freezer as it has a fan. The fan will come on to circulate the air. It will not necessarly run continuosly. The noise is most likely coming from the fan. I sold Frigidaire freezers for years and they are noisy compared to a refridgerator. If you think it is louder than it was when you bought it, I would replace the circulating fan. Also look at the back wall for frost as it could be a bad defrost heater blocking it with ice. Most likely just the fan though. Since it's in a detached garage, and you won't have to put up with the noise inside your house, it could run a while before failing. The fact it's getting cold is a very good sign. Also as you asked 2'nd, a freezer is ok in an unheated garage. Don't put a refrigerator in there. Unless It is a Whirlpoll Gladiator that is designed for such applications. Use to find out where the fan is if you feel it is necessary to replace it. Its not a tough job if you are handy. Their shipping is expensive so you might want to buy it locally.

Fridge isn't cold

if the compressor is running your ref. should be getting cold. Their is a defrost timer but when it is in defrost the compressor shuts off. I think you do have a leak.
