How do i fix the melted wire mass

Form the back of the alternator there are two wires:orange/blue and black. the orange/blue wire connects to a silver box labeled "Motor Craft Electronic Regulator". the black wire is melted to a black/orange and a yellow wire. there is another wire(yellow/blue) wire that looks like it is suppose to be connected top the melted wire mass but to which wire? are they all suppose to be like that? i started looking through the wires because none of my lights work and my ignition doesn't even make a noise when i turn the key

SOURCE: Fusible link wire gets really hot.

Removing the two smaller wires stops the exciter current to the alt which stops it charging.
Usually if a wire is getting hot its because:
A: Current overload..
B: Corrosion in wire restricting current.
C: Corroded terminal.

SOURCE: 1998 passat.i have a blue

check if the wire on the starter is fallen off or burnt. It might be touching on part of the chassis or engine and shorting when you try start the car.Is the engine turning over? Put the car in 3rd gear and try pushing it to check if the engine is not seized. If the engine is seized the starter wire will heat up as the starter will not be able to turn the engine.

Where is the fuse for alternatoron2004 navigator light on dash comes on after alternator has been changed

If the thick black and orange wire does not have battery voltage, there is a fuseable link near the battery or starter that is melted.
Same thing with the smaller orange and lite blue wire.
The smaller wires involve the computer and the instrument panel warning light.

Where do i trace my orange/blue wire to from alternator? i have new alternator and batteries, but won't charge. will charge if i jump orange/blue to positive post. Any good suggestions? Thanks Phil

The orange/light blue wire is connected to the red (positive) wire from the battery, through a fusible link (or two links depending on engine size) to pin #3 of the voltage regulator at the alternator. The fusible link will be in the harness so you may have to disassemble the harness. The fusible link is probably blown. This was probably caused by the defective alternator/regulator assembly.

According to my diagram, it appears to go from the red batt wire to a gray 12 gauge fusible link, into a brown 18 gauge link, then turns into the orange/light blue wire and to the alternator.

(A fusible link is a piece of wire that acts like a fuse and will burn out, opening the circuit when amperage above its rating. This protects the circuit and lessens the chance of fire).

Good luck, please ask if you need more info.

Wires mixed on alternator

If you can give me color of wires you have. My manual is showing about 10 different combinations, depending on whether it has electric choke, idiot light or gauge, ammeter in dash etc. Main wires are Orange, or orange with light blue stripe, goes to FLD on alternator, white with black stripe goes to STA on alternator, and BAT terminal should have a black cable from battery. Be careful, there in case someone changed it to red or another colour , just be sure it's coming from battery, and it may have wire from reulator joined into it.It also shows a ground from regulator to alternator too, so just in case it's black too, don't mix those 2 up.
This may do it, but if not, get back to me.

I puled off my old alternator and forgot to put

So, you have an integral regulator on your alternator.... so you have to connect the output of the regulator to your battery. You also have to connect between the regulator and the alternator. Hmmmmm how to describe....
using your descriptions of wires and prongs.....
Connect Wire Color to Prong

Yellow (w/wht dot) A+
White (w/blk tracer) STA
Black (w/orange tracer) Bat (alt output)
Ground wire Grd
Orange (w/Lt.Blue) F (field)
If battery was connected, the Black with orange tracer wire would have +12 Volts on it at all times
