40 gb hard disk is so less,
because of that your computer becoming slow..
but you can fix it in one way..
install the window xp again, and this time just format which drive you want or else make two drive only.
or tell me d drive is NTFS OR FAT

How do I make 4 partition on a 40GB hard disc. What are the proceedings.

Boot up with the Windows XP installation CD
Follow the screen instructions -
Delete the existing Partition.
Create a new Partition (1st) but do not make it the maximum partition size - enter 1/4 of the maximum size.
Create another Partition (2nd) make this the same size as the 1st Create another Partition.(3rd) make this the same size as the 1st
Create another Partition (4th) make this the remaining max. size.
Format the Ist Partition Full NTSF (not quick format)
You can now proceed to install Windows on the 1st Partition.
After Windows XP has been installed and the computer's device drivers, go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Disk Management then allocate a drive letter to each of the Partitions then NTFS Format each of the Partitions.
Now each of the Partitions should indicated as Healthy.

I have delete the logical drive in disk management. my hitachi 40GB IDE hdd is not detected in diskmanagement, and i cannot format that drive. ple. help me

The hard disk is not detected, inaccessible or unreadable because of possible hardware failure, corruption and/ or I/O errors.

To troubleshoot this issue, restart the computer or rescan the disk to try and return the disk to Online

To rescan the disk, open Computer Management, and then click status. Disk Management. On the Action menu, click Rescan Disks.

Just make sure ide cable is fixed properly to the hard drive when scanning.

You did not indicate that the 40 Gb hard drive had Windows installed on it and whether it was the original hard disk for this computer.
There is a possibility the 40Gb hard drive is faulty.
Try installing the 40Gb hard drive as a slave drive with the 80Gb drive as the master drive (don't forget to set the jumper on the 40Gb hard drive as Slave. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the 40Gb hard drive, and when the computer boots up, if it can see the 40Gb hard drive and opens the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK.

Prob with hard disk

IT IS NORMAL FOR THE HARD DRIVE TO BECOME VERY HOT WHILE WORKING. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TO CHANGE YOUR RAM ONCE AND TRY. HANGING ISSUES ARE MOSTLY RELATED TO RAM.

Try a low level format. There is a strong possibility that your hard disk will no longer be able to perform normally even after a low level reformatting. Looks like a new hard disk is the answer.

While doing format &drive partision

Formatted 4 drives into one?
How many physical hard disks are in the computer? How many logical drives did you have set up?
You can have 4 (or more) logical drives on one physical disk, but when you do a clean install and wipe the drive completely, you will wipe all partitions - I suspect this is what has happened and you only have the one physical drive.
I hope you have a backup.
Please try and explain it differently if this does not fix it.

Partision prblem

This is because an 80GB hard drive only has 75GB inside it will not be exact because of the way hard drive manufacturers compute the size. 80GB by name but only 75GB in real hard drive space. much like a if you have a flash drive or a portable uSB you will notice this also.
