The existing pads are deteriorating and are getting a bit funky
SOURCE: How do you remove just glass from drivers side mirror?
I posted earlier that I was facing this same problem and found a sight that said you needed to heat the mirror before you start digging. Got a blow driver and a flat head screwdriver and started prying and the pieces started coming out. Took a bit of effort, but the blow dryer was the key.
One thing, my mirror has the turn signal dots and I believe is also heated. When you start prying out the glass, the glass sits on a black rubber-like backing and that is glued to a thin mettalic looking sheet which has metallic leaders running through it. This is then glued to the backing plate. My guess is these metallic "runners" are the heating elements. You don't want to scrape that up. You want the mirror with the black backing and don't scrape the thin metallic sheet. The blow dryer is again key in getting that to detach.
My vehicle is a late model Yukon and everyone probably won't have this problem.
