Ive been trying to help a neighbor install his canon mp160. I used the install disk and it says that there is a connection problem and that the installation failed. The printer shows up on the computer when turned on, but with bubble stating the same installation failure. I have had the cord replaced and its still a problem. Any ideas about what the problem could be? Thanks

- I'm sorry I forgot to add the important info. He is using Windows XP. I installed it twice, once connecting the usb before and then after. The disk said it was good for XP, but I downloaded and installed the XP drivers to see if that was the problem and still no change.

Couple things:

1) When are you connecting the USB cable? Before or after installing the software?

2) What operating system are you using? Does the disk have the correct software for that OS?

- I meant to post a clarification request instead of a solution, but since I did, I will say in addition to the above, the setup shows that this printer should be turned OFF and the USB cable DISCONNECTED when you install the software. When the software prompts connect the USB cable and turn the printer ON.

The support shows the same driver for Vista, XP, and Win 2000 so that should not be a problem.

However, if the computer is a 64-bit system, the driver would be different. Do yo know how to check for this?

Finally, antivirus programs and firewalls can also prevent successful installs. Sometimes you need to disable these, do the install, and then re-enable them.

Hope something helps here. Thanks for using Fixya.

- Make sure you uninstall any software and remove the printer using Control Panel before attempting another install.

- To check for 64-bit, right click on My Computer icon and then select Properties. In the system window it should say 64-bit somewhere if it is. If it doesn't say you can assume it is a 32-bit system.
