Question about Heating & Cooling
Have someone cut the AC on & off as you listen under the hood. If it makes a noise when you cut it on, it is probably the compressor and I would guess that it is the main bearing in it. You can carefully take a solid stick and put it on the compressor and it will magnify the sound. You'll have to replace either the bearing or the entire compressor if it is leaking coolant.
