SOURCE: Engine starts, but stalls when clutch is released.

The is a safety switch located underneath the mower, in the dashboard area. This switch will not pass voltage to the ignition system unless the pedal is depressed, or the deck is not all the way up. However, your culprit is most likely the pto (power take off) switch on the dash that engages the blades. It will not allow the mower to start, if pulled, and if faulty will shut off ignition power when you release the pedal. First. You'll need a volunteer to sit on the mower and operate the controls.  Now put the deck down and with the pedal depressed start the engine. Nothing should happen, if it does replace the deck switch Sears part number #176138 mentioned above. Now raise the deck and release the pedal. Again, nothing should happen. Same solution if it does. If nothing happens on both tests the switch is ok. NOW. Behind the dash, find the pto switch, and squeeze the sides, depressing two clips that hold it in the dash. You should now be able to slide it though the dash, wiring attached. Unplug the switch. With pedal depressed, deck up, someone sitting on the seat, start the mower. Now release the pedal (making sure to block the wheels and have the transmission handle is in the neutral position. If the engine continues to run, you found the problem. Replace the PTO switch. Sears part number # 174651. Also, check the plug to the pto, ignition and deck switches for corrosion as this is a common problem, though not likely to cause yours, it could. Good luck, and please let us know the outcome, good or bad. Thanks so much.

SOURCE: Engine stalls

DId you remove the existing gas or just topped it off? If you topped it off, I would dump the fuel and replace the fuel filter, after that I would clean the carb (Spray cleaner).
Good luck!

SOURCE: My tractor stalls like it is starved for gas

I had a similar problem with a sears tractor. close to the carbarator is a rectangle box with a rubber hose going to the engine block - remove the hose and spray carb cleaner in the hose wait a few mins and try again - its a vacuum for the carb

SOURCE: Our new to us john deere 345 tractor won't keep running

You may try blowing backwards from behind the fuel filter into the gas line. Not to much air pressure though. Make sure the gas cap is off.

Odd that it has had the issue since new. Could be the gas cap vent is plugged. Maybe paint over the vent hole? When it stalls, open the cap and listen for air entering the tank. Does it quit after running it for a while? Or does it quit regardless of run time when the tank is less than half full?

Won't start when facing uphill or flat only when facing downhill.

sounds like a fuel pump fault, gravity is the only thing feeding the engine, then when engine is running the suction is sucking fuel in.

Can't get gas to 22hp Kohler. I have check the filter, lines and the fuel pump. Tank is half full and when the engine spins over, no gas. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

If it starts fine and idles fine but then stalls or doesn't have power when you juice it, it sounds like a fuel problem. It is unlikely a carb issue if it gets regular use and as long as its not sitting for long periods of time. Check the vent hole on the gas cap (if you have one). If it is a gravity-fed fuel system and the vent hole on the gas cap is clogged with dirt, dust, and debris, then the gas will not flow to the carb fast enough and you'll get a very lean mixture. This is because the engine exhaust cycle creates a vacuum which siphons fuel from the gas tank to the carbs- and if the vent hole is clogged the fuel wont flow. Sure, it will idle fine because the engine isn't demanding much fuel at idle, but when you open up the throttle it will stall because the air:fuel ratio will be too high (symptomatic of a lean mixture) Clear out the vent hole in the gas cap and see if t Hope this helps

Losing power when its below half full of gas

Pressure test the fuel system to measure the pressure regulator to ensure correct fuel pressure under all driving conditions. Do the test with a less than 1/2 full tank of fuel.

Lawnmower working find put choke on engine ran rough and stalled and would not restart. I tried every trouble shooting method which includes air filter, spark plug , fuel, electric connections, fuel filter...

sounds as though the carburetor is not working, pour some gas into the carburetor and see if it runs, if it runs and quits then the fuel is not getting to the carburetor or the carburetor needs to be cleaned and rebuilt. Hope this helps Tim

Tractor is not getting fuel pass the fuel fi;ter...new filter

Check the fuel lines, fuel pre-filter[screener] and check valve, all of these are ahead of the fuel filter. Also if the fuel filter is not the problem then the primer pump on top of the filter housing may have a leak or debris in the diaphragm so that you can not get the fuel to completely fill the filter.Once the filter is full, full fuel out of the bleed screw on the filter housing, then you need to turn on the key and keep on pumping the hand primer. If it still will not start then get a 11/16 wrench and crack two lines on the injection pump.Crank over the tractor until it sounds like it may go,tighten the lines, the crank again and it should start.

I am having the same problem. STX38 stalls w/half tank

Hi..my name is Keith..im not always right..but it sounds like your gas cap isnt venting..so next time it stalls..and the fliter is empty..take the gas cap off and see if the filter fills up..if it does..then i would replace the gas cap..also..if your fuel tank is below the carberator..it will have a vacuum operated fuel pump that could be weak or bad..and the fuel is gravity fed to a certain point in the tank..and then the fuel pump isnt working to get the rest of the fuel to the carb..i hope this has helped..if not please write me back

My 9N is having trouble starting. It turns over fine but seems to be flooding. When it finally sputters to a start, it takes a while to run smooth. Also the idle seems to be fast and there is no change in...

Shut off fuel to carburetor, drain carburetor. Open fuel and count to three then shut off fuel. Crank engine then pull choke for 1 second then push in. If engine starts open fuel valve at tank. Also try lowering float level in carburetor. Good luck.
