Find out what hardware it is talking about if you can. Even if the hardware in question is broken, a lot of the parts for laptops are modular i.e. you can replace them without having to replace the entire motherboard. HP laptops are probably the best at this beucase their motherboard is only a giant controller, as opposed to having every single device built into the motherboard. It would be best if you told us the type of laptop you have.

There is also the chance that the drop caused the hard drive to become damaged, in which case, restoring the damaged files would be the quickest way to fix it. I would not recommend trusting that hard drive anymore though, I would get a backup of some sort going, even if it doesnt look like it is the hard drive.

Please make sure all devices are connected to your computer properly. Access it in safe mode and I am sure it would run, in in the safe mode just clean Windows registry database using some reliable software such as Reginout Cleaner. After cleanup process, start your computer normally.

Hope it would help you.

First off you should have backups of all important data in case something like this happens....ok lecture over----now boot to SAFE-MODE (F8 @startup) and go to DEVICE MANAGER and see exactly which device is giving you the issue..I doubt that its the harddrive because at that point you already passed POST and you said WINDOWS encountered the problem with a device..so most likely it is a DRIVER issue (aka software code for all hardware devices)

Windows is corrupted beyond repair, you need to reinstall it. For the recovery discs, call Toshiba at 800-457-7777. They will want to know the computer's serial number and a credit card number.

The microphone may not work because of a hardware or configuration problem. To determine if it's a hardware problem, test the microphone in Sound Recorder.

  1. Click "Start," > "Programs" ("All Programs" for Windows XP) > "Accessories" > "Entertainment" > "Sound Recorder."
  2. Click the Record button and speak into the microphone of the camera. You should see the green line move, indicating the application is picking up sound.
  3. Click the Stop button.
  4. Click the Play button. If there is no sound at playback, check to make sure the correct device is selected.
    1. Click "Edit," then "Audio Properties."
    2. Make sure Logitech is listed as the Preferred device for "Sound recording."
The microphone may also be defective. To test this, try the camera on another USB enabled system.
If you can record sound in Sound Recorder, but not in the QuickCam application, try setting the Logitech Microphone as the Preferred device in Audio Properties.
