First thing I would do is uninstall any software you have already tried to install. Then in the Control Panel, remove the printer.

Then...Go to HP supprt for your printer:

HP D1420 Support

Select Software & Driver Downloads.

Select your Operating System. (Vista)

You will then get a list of available driver/software to download. (Note that there is also a link to order a new CD if you so desire.)

Select the Basic or Full feature. (I would go Full Feature.)

Then the download page will appear. Click on the file name to download it. Select Save when you get the download window. Save it to your Desktop for ease of installation afterward. Do not Run.

Once downloaded, remove one end of the USB cable from the printer. Turn the printer ON.

Double-click the file on the desktop that you downloaded. Do not connect the USB cable until prompted by the software.

Save the Support page above to your Favorites for future use.

Thanks for using Fixya. If you have any trouble, just Comment back.

Hi,

You can download the printer drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model printer and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Use this link to download the drivers :-
