Sounds like a driver problem. Make sure you have all the updates. If the problem started after a recent update, a driver rollback may be needed.
If it is not the driver, then it might be a setting in the way your laptop handles video. Go into your ATI or nvidia setting under control panel. Review all of your setting and make sure nothing unusual is set, or find a 'restore to defaults' button if it has one.
