SOURCE: how often should i change tranny fluid, 3000 mi,

If you're running Harley oil, you're running either semi-synthetic or full synthetic. You bike came with H-D Syn3 20W50 fully synthetic oil in the transmission. They use the Syn3 in the engine, transmission, and primary now. You can use whatever you like. Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Mobil make oils that are suitable for this use but you'll have to check their website to determine which one they recommend.

SOURCE: Chanmge from conventional 20W50 oil to synthetic

Not a problem, I've done it on my '94 model Wide Glide. Your bike probably came from the factory with synthetic oil in it. Harley developed their Syn3 20W50 oil and the bikes are shipped with the stuff in all three compartments, the engine, the primary, and the transmission. Just check the manufactures website to make sure whatever oil you decide to use meets Harley's specs.

Good Luck

SOURCE: i have a 1979 shuvelhead

Personally, I use H-D oil for the engine and tranny. I use 60wt engine oil and the H-D semi-synthetic transmission oil. Now, there are many other brands of oil that you can use. Golden Spectro, Royal Purple, RevTech, Amsoil, Mobil, Motor Factory, and many others. You need to go to their websites to find out what is recommended. H-D oil is close to me and priced about the same as the others.

Good Luck
Steve

I have a Toyota Celica 1995 2.2 L manual transmission when the engine is "hot' or it has been running for a while, is hard to Go into 2, downshift from 3 to 2 also sometimes struggles to go into rever

The tranny is probably on the way out. The synchronizers are what synchonize the spinning shafts and gears inside the tranny by braking and trying to match the speed of one shaft to another. If they are worn, they will have trouble. Also check the oil level on the old tranny. You might find it is low on oil and you might be able to buy some time. You could try draining the transmission when it is warm. Look at the oil and if it is loaded with a metallic sheen or worse: with particles, the tranny is toast and not worth repairing so just have a good used low mile tranny put in. Pretty cheap job and easy with a 4 cyl engine. As a last desperation, you might try putting in some synthetic tranny oil like amsoil or Royal purple. But if the synchros are shot, so is the tranny. Make sure you drain the junkyard tranny to check for particles before throwing it in. If it is full of metal, take it back. On second thought, put that synthetic tranny oil in the junkyard tranny. Tranny oil should be changed very 50 to 100 K and if you or someone grinds gears, even more often!

What is the recomended oil for a 1997 harley davidson heritage softail classic

Harley recommends you use their 20w50 or Syn 3 (synthetic) oil. If you use Syn 3, you can also use it in the trans and primary. If you use conventional oil, Harley's Formula Plus goes in the trans and primary. Truth be told, any good high quality motorcycle oil (Amsoil, etc) made for air cooled engines will work in the crankcase.

Noise in gearbox when engine is hot

Sounds like the oil is the wrong grade or just needs changing. Drain the oil, check your drain plug for metal residue, allow it to drain thoroughly and replace the o-ring on plug. re-install the plug but don't overtighten it, which is easy to do. Fill the tranny with 75-140 gear oil. I recommend synthetic oil from Amsoil, or equivalent.

Oil for a Harley Davidson Sportster 1991

Harley-Davidson recommends their 20W50 petroleum based oil for the engine. You can use the H-D Syn 3 20W50 synthetic oil in the engine but I don't recommend it in the primary/transmission area. You can use any 20W50 oil as long as the API rating has a "C" rating for use in diesel engines. Look for the round circle somewhere on the container that had the API initials in it. It should say something like "SJ/CG". What you're looking for the "C" rating. If you wish to use a specific brand of oil, got to their website and look for their recommendations.

In the transmission, Harley recommends their Semi-Synthetic Primary and Transmission lubricant for Sportsters. The lube lubricates both the primary and the transmission on the Sportster. I don't recommmend full synthetic transmission lube on any bike built before 1995 as it will cause the gears to run noisey. In 1995, Harley changed the back cut on the gears and this made use of full synthetic lube more quiet running. Of course, you can use the full synthetic from a lubrication view point. It's just a bit noisey for my taste.

Whatever you use, make sure you go online and check the manufacturer's suggestion for use.

Good Luck
