We have a cannon pixma iP1800 inkjet printer. Anytime we try to print it comes up with "service error 5100" and tells us to refer to the instruction manual. we no longer have the instruction manual. i've tried doing a maintenance check but it won't even print that.

Re: service error 5100
Try this to get rid of the error:
Service error 5100 is a carriage home position error.
Turn off and unplug the printer from the power supply.
Remove any paper.
Buy a can of compressed air from an electronics shop or computer store.
Use the compressed air (Not a vacuum!!!) to blast out any dust bunnies,
paper particles and debris. (Don't do this with the cartridges removed
as you're likely to fill the printhead with air!!)
Use isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab (Qtip) to clean the plastic
strip that runs the length of the guide rail (the metal rail that the
cartridge carriage moves along), it may be contaminated with ink and
Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges inside the cartridge carriage to ensure that they're connecting properly.
With the power off, carefully slide the print head (carriage) to the
center of the guide rail. You should not have to force it! (There will
be some light resistance but it should move quite easily by gently
pushing on it with your finger.)
Close all the access doors, plug it back in, connect your USB cable and turn on the power.
As it runs through the initialization, the printer should sense that
the carriage is out of position and automatically move it back to where
it should be.

Hi You can Try 2 things. ERROR 5100 means that there is some foreign object blocking your cartridges carriage that disables it from moving. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.
First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.
If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there Next try. It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire. Solution 1: Clean the timing strip.
Solution 2: The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .
Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Error 5100 is Carriage error.Possible problems in: - Carriage unit - Timing **** strip film - Logic board assembly - Carriage motor
First, make sure there is no paper jam anywhere in the machine.. look inside, rear, where the paper tray (output) is, etc to see if you find any shreds or torn paper that may have gotten stuck and you didn't see.Look carefully in the zone of Purge unit, using flashlight in the right side on printer. If this not help your printer need service.
ERROR 5100 means that there is some foreign object blocking your ink cartridge carriage that disables it from moving. It may be a piece of paper or a scotch tape or a staple wire. You may try cleaning also the encoder strip with a moist tissue paper. Furthermore, you may also try cleaning CAREFULLY the contact points of the cartridge holder and the cartridge itself (those shiny bronze pins) with a moist lint-free cloth.
