94 Jeep Cherokee TPS - back feed

I have a 94 jeep cheroke SE with the 4.0 and aw4 transmission. Last week the jeep started shifting only when it hit 4500rpm. I tested the TPS and had 5 volts input and 4.6 volts output at all times. Even when the TPS is unplugged. I have replaced the TPS and PCM with no change. The jeep still idles high and shifts at 4500 rpm. I'm at my wits end. I'm also getting a code 24 from the computer.

You are still getting high or low voltage at tps? What is the voltage and do you have a unstable idle? Put you + lead on terminal 3 and - lead on terminal 1 turn ignition on and check voltage to be at approximately 5 volts. You can also back probe with it connected at center wire and ground probe to a good ground at engine. Turn ignition on it should read between 0.20 - 0.90 slowly manually open throttle it should rise all the way to 4.5 voltd at full open. If its bad change tps if no 5.0 volts from pcm on first test check connections at pcm. The center tps connector supply wire comes from pin 22 and connection 3 ( which is 5 volt supply ) comes from pin 6. You should be able to back probe pin 6 turn ignition on and have 5 volts. If not 5 v brain has problem.

Likely you have a shift control module malfunction. Module is probably on the right side fender in the engine compartment. Check to see if you have one (some do and some dont... go figure...I've got a 91 & 95... I have about five different diagrams and NONE apply to my vehicles)

SOURCE: shift indicator light 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

There are two parts to it, a voltage resistor, and the EL panel itself.

You need to remove the console first. There are 2 screws under the front rubber pad, two under the cup holder, two in the bin. Remove those six first, take the storage bin out, then slide the rear cupholder out, remove the two screws under the cup holder, and one in front of it.

There are a total of 6 flat screws, and 3 self tapping screws you have removed.

Put the parking brake on, shift the tranny to N, and the transfer case to the middle position if equipped.

Remove the entire console. Slide the shifter beezel as far up vertically as you can. There are 4 clips you ned to remove to do it.
You will see a blue and black wire running into the back. Follow those wires to the resistor. You will see a transparent EL panel attatched to the resistor by two clips.

Usually, one or both of these clips has come loose, causing the light to work intermittantly. Clip them back on, and turn on the headlights to confirm that the light works correctly now.

Re-install everything in the opposite order.

SOURCE: 2004 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 getting Error code P0505, I

Yes its possible that PCM, is issue, but its not possible that PCM is issue.--------- Do you notice the difference after replacing the idle, was the idle high or low before replacing the IAC valve? And did the idle problem solved after replacing the IAC valve.----------- The check engine light will need to be reset with a scan tool, or you can wait and the computer will reset after the computer has seen that the problem is gone for a certain amount of starts. This is assuming that the IAC was actually the problem, there are other causes that can cause this code to set but if the idle was to high and now it is good the problem is likely fixed. some times it takes approx next 100 or 50 drive cycles to automatically reset the code.------------

But if you still notice the idle problem, even after replacing the IAC valve, then other possible causes for this same error code P0505 are:---

  • Stepper motor Coil 1 or 2 circuit is open or shorted to ground.
  • Stepper motor Coil 3 or 4 circuit is open or shorted to ground.
  • Stepper motor coil circuit(s) shorted to system power (B+).
  • Stepper motor is damaged or has failed.
  • PCM has failed.
  • ----------- But yes if all checked ok, then it faulty PCM.----- It has to be replaced by dealer. This will help.Thanks.Helpmech,.

Transmission shifts late 89 jeep cherokee 4.0l Auto

discovered a service bulletin on my Jeep on "Alldata.com", which indicated "A/T - Throttle Position Sensor".I don't subscribe to the site, so I could only see this header. I thendid a search on Throttle Position Sensor and found a number of sitesthat described numerous transmission problems attributed to this sensor.I tookthe Jeep to a Chrysler dealer near me, and purchased the part for$69.00. I installed it myself, and the Jeep shifts beautifully, betterthan when I bought it.

    A. The TSB you are refering to is number ATRATB324A, dated 1/1/1996 witrh the subject "A/T - AW4 Throttle Position Sensor (TP)".
TheTransmission Control Unit does, indeed, use an input, among others, from the TPS to determine shift times. So if there is a problem withthe TPS, it will effect transmission shifting. In fact, it is not allthat uncommon to see a TPS cause a transmission problem.

If the transmission works fine after the TPS is replaced then I would only recommend thata routine flush be done to it and perhaps treat it to a new filter.
