Is it the same with all DVD's? If so then the Drive is faulty and would need to be replaced, are you on warranty and do any dvd's work?

Try to open the dvd - press start -> my computer or computer -> then open the dvd drive when you have dvd disc in there.

If you can't open the drive to see files, and dvd movies or dvd programs / games don't work then the drive is faulty, the laser optics are failing, the cd works but the dvd reading doesn't work anymore the laser would need to be replaced but due to low price of the drive its better to replace the whole drive than to try to repair.

The CD is on a different laser frequency to DVD. The lens can no longer produce / read the DVD's frequency and is faulty.

The drive would need to be replaced, not intelligent repair since the price of a new drive is so cheap.

the CD laser and the DVD laser are different. The light
from a DVD laser has a wavelength of 640 nanometers where the light from a
CD laser is 780 nanometers. The smaller DVD laser wavelength allows it to
focus on the smaller pits in the DVD disk. Thus, accounting for the
    increase in storage capacity.

Its like the laser is out of focus and like a human eye it would need glasses to read...

For the drive to read two types of discs it needs to be able to produce the right laser for the disc to read it.

It can still produce the one ment for CD's but it no longer can produce the DVD reading laser.

So the drive needs to be either repaired or replaced.

I have an Acer Extensa, problem is dvd disc doesn't seem to spin when I load it into slot. Always gives me the no disc detected window. R> U>

first go to the ACER web site and download the lattes drivers for your particular notebook. could just be a driver issue. if that does not work then the DVD drive may have gone bad.

Try restarting. If it doesn't work, data cable of the drive (CD/DVD Player) may need to be reseated (pull out and plug back in) inside the computer. You may want to call manufacturer or a local tech (if not in warranty) if you don't know how to (just to be safe).

Acer Extensa 5420 won't turn on, not a power/battery problem.

Just for the heck of it, try blowing out the cooling fan with some compressed air. If you have never cleaned it and the fan stops turning, the computer will go into a safe mode and not start up.
Ther should be a vent somewhere on the side of the laptop that vents hot air cooling the CPU. That is where you need to blow it out.
Hope it helps- just a longshot...

DVD is not recordable, Acer Extensa 5420

Just put in the blank dvd without trying to burn anything to it and see
if your pc see's the blank dvd, if not find one that is recognized by your pc. After you put in a blank dvd, it should show under my computer in the drive and should be able to open it like a folder, or
windows will pop up a little window that ask's if you would like to burn anything to the dvd.

Acer issue: itunes wont recognize my cd burner

The DVD burner *IS* the CD burner (the same drive does both jobs). Does Windows itself recongize it? (if so, is it able to burn CD's using it?)
