Last time I used it it was fine but now all of a sudden at first when I put a cd in the system's display lights would be very dim and freeze until I would shut it off. Now the entire stereo will turn itself off and its clock is reset and put on demo mode when I try to read a cd.

Put the player On for few hours or overnight. Now remove the panel and get access to the optical head unit, use a clean ear bud to polish the optical head. If not the optical head is weak and must be replaced.
first the laser may be dirty. you can find lens cleaning disks at any cd store. But have you recently bought a new pack of cds? Sometimes certain CDs just simply dont work with some players. No reason for it they jsut dont work. You could also be using the wrong type of cd, CD+R vs CD-R
Repeat play (Remote control only) Press [FM MODE/REPEAT] on the remote control before or during play. The player will play all the tracks or all the programmed tracks repeatedly. " " appears on the display. To cancel repeat play, press [FM MODE/ REPEAT] again. " " disappears.
Run a "Laser Lens Cleaner" thru the unit a couple times. Use one that takes fluid, you can find them at just about any retail store for 15-20. If that doesn't solve it, it needs to be repaired. At that point weigh the cost over replacement. A new transport usually will cost 100-150 on average for parts and labor. Hope this helps
Unplug the system. Turn the entire unit upside down. The CDs will eject. After I tried this (found it online somewhere), it worked fine for about 2 months. Now it suddenly turns on by itself and ejects CDs (creepy). But at least the original problem was solved.
I thought that I had the same problem. I then discovered that when I put 3 CD's in it started up on it's own. If you push the demo button you can see how it's supposed to light up the number of tracks in a square on the right of the display. It wasn't doing that until I put in all 3. Then it started up and I was able to use the disc 1, 2 & 3 buttons to change from 1 CD to the next and I used the Up and Down buttons to change songs and the play button above the tape deck is multi-functional. Hope this helps.
Maybe you should try cleaning the lens by opening the shelf TOP, and cleaning the lens? I had that problem. Take a Q - Tip with alcohol on it and it will do the job. Careful to not touch any components, and unplug first! The system can electrocute you even if unplugged, so don't touch any electronic component else than the lens inside.
Try a lens cleaner cd, as when the lens gets misaligned or if it's quite old, it will find it harder to read a DVD as the tracks are much closer together than that of a VCD as they are cd's and their tracks are wider apart and easier to read.
