Hi, There are 2 options that might be ha[[ening. Wither the water inlet valve has stuck open or the switch in the dispensor has gone bad.
Turn the water off to the inlet valve. Push the water dispenser button and see if you hear the inlet valve buzzing. Release the button and see if the valve stop buzzing. If the valve stops buzzing, the switch is ok. I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you later.

Joy, If the valve is buzzing even tho you are not pushing the dispenser lever, the dispenser switch is hanging up. If this is the case, you should have a repairman look at it. These dispensers can be very trying to get apart.

Ok, I am sorry if it takes me a bit to answer. My gmail is not working and I have to find your response another way.

Turn you water source back on and see ifd the water starts flowing even thos the lever is not pushed.

The inlet valve is not very hard to change. If you will get me a model #. I could look up the valve # and give it to you.

I used the water dispenser and when done it wouldn't shut off. This is an inside of the unit dispenser. How do you fix this?

Your unit has a inlet valve that the supply of water flows to..This valve splits between allowing water to either the dispenser or the icemaker..This valve may be sticking open allowing water to keep flowing to dispenser..Google Model # w/problem to find location and part#..or call your local appliance repair company

The water from the dispenser is running and i can't stop it how do you turn of???

The cause of the problem you describe could be ether water inlet valve or the water lever dispenser switch.Locate the water valve at the back of the refrigerator, open the water and take off both plugs from the valve. If the water flow want stop replace the water valve. If it will, replace the water lever switch.

Ice dispenser stuck on

Either the paddle for the ice/water dispenser is stuck or you have a bad microswitch behind the dispenser.
To stop the ice/water from dispensing open the freezer door and press or hold the child lock button down. Once the unit is in child lock mode you can shut the door without energizing the dispenser.
Another option is to remove the upper freezer door hinge cover and disconnect the wire connector up there. This will remove voltage from the dispenser as well. Then either replace the paddle or switch. Sometimes the paddles/switches will get stuck because of splash up from ice dropping in sugary drinks.

Water would not stop running into icemaker, now

The water inlet valve(where the water supply connects to the back) may have been staying open and now has burned so it don't work at all. . You can swap the wires on the dual water inlet valve and disconnect the water line at the valve which goes to the ice maker. When you try the water dispenser the water will come out there. When you stop the water dispenser, if the water at the valve doesn't stop, the valve isn't closing so you'll need to replace it.

I have a 12 year old Whirlpool side-by-side refridgerator (ed20db) with water and ice dispenser. I have not used the water dispenser for years, but for some reason when I hit the lever yesterday, it did...

you have a possible water valve that is not shutting off all the way on the water dispensing side, it has 2 coils, one for ice and one for water. the other possibility is the dispenser tank is frozen, from being too cold in the refr. section and thats causing water pressure to continue running even when not pushing the lever. let the unit warm up slighty on the refr side and see if you can get water to flow properly.
if not working after warming up, then you might have to replace the water inlet valve.

WATER RUNS OUT OF THE WATER DISPENSER ON THE DOOR OF THE SIDE BY SIDE

THe problem may be in the water valve for the water despenser,

you could try disconnecting the 2 wires on top of the water despenser side of the valve and see if that will stop it. IF not the valve may need replaceing, may be leaking thu water vavle when closed
