Question about Washing Machines

How do I access the inside of my washer?

My washer has stopped spinning and agitating. Before calling in my serviceman I'd like to see if the problem is as simple as a stuck loose sock or rag. How do I open up the top or front panel to access the inside?? I bought this washer at a yard sale and have no manual.

It's a Whirlpool Washer - Model # LSR7233EZ

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

Now...a washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

Take note of your symptoms:

1. Washer fills, may or may not agitate, will not advance to the rinse cycle, and will NOT drain - lid switch.

2. Washer fills, does NOT agitate or spin, but WILL drain - motor coupling.

If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this information is helpful to you.

I have a GE washer model # WHDRR418GWW. It is about 19 months old. It stopped agitating and spinning. It will fill with water and the timer/knob will go thru the cycles. But when it reaches the washing...

You have what is called "agitating dogs" there are usually 4 of them at the bottom of the agitator. They have small grippers which lock onto the agitator and agitates. If the washer is ever overfilled or over time filled to heavy this will wear down the nylon teeth on the "dogs". The top of the agitator will spin off, you will see a bolt inside at the bottom, remove bolt and the agitator will pull out. Google "agitating dogs on washer. It will give you pictures for a better understanding. If the belt was broken the washer would not drain, because the belt turns the pump. These dogs are about $5 and honestly easy to install. Good Luck.

Kenmore 80 washer, during agitation, only spins one direction. Spins and drains fine...

First, see the Sears Parts site for your washer.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.10852990

It looks as if you have a one piece agitator.

If you look at the section on the agitator, you'll see what are called "agitator dogs". These are designed to allow the agitator to turn one way only.

It's possible that the "dogs" are worn or broken. They are a simple and inexpensive part to replace.

See the following illustrated description of how to access and replace them.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=136

While you have the agitator off, I'd also check the splines inside the agitator and on the agitator shaft for excessive wear.

Hope this helps.

Washer machine not draining water

The GE serviceman repaired my machine approximately 40 minutes. I paid $189 for the issue to be resolved in 5 minutes. This is no exaggeration.

The serviceman arrived at 2:50pm and finished at 2:55pm. It took another 5 minutes for me to write the check and he was gone.

My recommendation is...
- Purchase the GE service plan prior to calling GE to repair the service. A 1-Year service plan is $40 and 2-Year is $75. It costs $99 just for the serviceman to come to your house.

- Fix the issue yourself. Of course, this only applies if you are handy. I am handy and I tried to fix the problem myself. I just couldn't figure out the location of the access panel.

Solution...
The access panel is on the front. This can be removed in less than 20 seconds. The notches on the access panel is in line with the edging of the washing machine door. To remove, slide in a flat object like a flat-head screwdriver. Wiggle up and down on each side until door comes loose. Lift up door and set aside.

The water pump is on the lower right in the front of the washing machine. If your wash machine has any water in it, you want to use a shop vac to empty it out. The serviceman used a clamp to stop the water from running down. A little water still came out but he used my shop vac to get it up. It was less than a cup full and I had a 1/2 tub of water. Afterwards, he stuck his fingers in the water pump and pulled out the item that was blocking the pump.

Guess what was blocking the pump? The item was my two-month old daughter's sock. He recommends using a washing bag.

Remember this solution is for GE 315 model that is a top load washer. This will most likely work with similar models. I knew my water pump was still working because it hummed during the rinse and spin cycles.

Good luck and I hope this saves you $189 or any other fees.

Washer repair

If it spins fint, then there are "agitator dogs" located in the center of the agitator. Pop of the cover in the center and you should see a handle, pull it up and you should see a bold that needs to be taken out. This usually takes the whole agitator off and you get to find those missing pairs of socks under it as well LOL. Inside the agitator you should see three things that are inside the agitator looking from the top. These are the agitator dogs and are very cheap and easy to change. Just call a local appliance parts reseller and wala! Or www.partsstore.com
