Look in the control panel> system> Device manager and make sure there are no yellow question marks. If there is then you need drivers for the card reader to work. There might be other drivers that need to be loaded to. Not sure start by installing the chipset drivers. Then the mass controller driver.

My dell optiplex 950 has been reloaded with XP service pack 3. it runs well, has 3 gig ram and ample hd storage.

Why would you want Win XP? It's old, no longer supported and a security liability. Upgrade to Win 7 or 10... the sound drivers will probably load and problem solved.

Can you just format or wipe the drive and reload from scratch? You may need another working machine with which to conduct the operation.

Garmin shows only device being reloaded/recharged

Hello,

When the device shows that it is hooked up to a larger device, it is in mass storage or data mode and usually will do this when connected to a computer to receive map and software updates.
This will also happen if the Nuvi is connected with an incompatible cable.
Using the correct vehicle power cable will remedy this.
The Nuvi 300 is an old GPS and should probably be replaced with a newer model.

Just bought new camera it says msdc

The MSDC option in digital cameras stands for Mass Storage Device Class. It is one of the many subclasses of the USB computer peripheral connection protocol.

This class as implemented in digital cameras, allows a connection between a computer and a digital camera by showing the digital camera, when connected to the computer, as a removable disk drive, temporarily attached to the computer. Pictures taken are retrieved using either cut and paste, copy and paste or drag and drop from the digital camera's picture folder onto a real hard drive or other writeable media available in the computer.

In addition, arbitrary data (does not have to be pictures) can be stored in the digital camera's onboard memory to the limit of the memory. The MSDC device class can be implemented by any kind of electronic device which has embedded memory storage in any form such as flash memory, IDE hard drives, etc.

As I was on a site. The computer froze. I rebooted it, which took a minute to do. When it came up, it displays a windows boot manager screen saying imwindiws has encountered a problem communicating with...

1. This is a virus that has embedded it self in the hard drive and has rendered the hard drive boot sector to a null state causing a corrupted boot up sector.
2. the only remedy here is to format the hard drive or to reinstall Windows on to a known good sector on the hard drive. This is not for a novice and take a few hours to complete
3. A new hard drive is needed here and reloading the Windows Operating system.
4. if this is a usb drive it could be that the electronics have malfunctioned and a new case with new electronic will have to be installed.
5. USB driveS have to be ejected properly or they will cause the electronics to fail.
6. in the task bar the drive is to be safely removed by the system to avoid data malfunction to the usb device.

Some part of the device has "failed".

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

Make sure you have all programs and folders closed. Then try stopping usb mass storage, there should be more then one option so try removing the drive itself on the list. If that doesn't work. I myself would probably just restart the computer. Then try again.
Thanks,
